Percy Wootton
Percy Wootton is an American cardiologist. In June 1997, he became president of the American Medical Association, after having served as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1991 to 1996. Wootton was a clinical professor of medicine at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University. Education Wootton earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Lynchburg College in 1953. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University in 1957. In medical school, he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Wootton returned to Lynchburg College to pursue a Doctorate of Sciences, which he earned in 1998. The American Medical Association (AMA) is a professional association and lobbying group of physicians and medical students. Founded in 1847, it is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Membership was approximately 240,000 in 2016. The AMA's stated mission is "to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health." The Association also publishes the ''Journal of the American Medical Association'' (JAMA). The AMA also publishes a list of Physician Specialty Codes which are the standard method in the U.S. for identifying physician and practice specialties. Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society () is an honor society in the field of medicine. Alpha Omega Alpha currently has active Chapters in 132 LCME- accredited medical schools in the United States and Lebanon. It annually elects over 4,000 new members. The majority of new members are elected in their final year of medical school, but distinguished teachers, faculty members, residents, and alumni can also be inducted into the society. All elections are held at local Chapters. No elections are held nationally. The Medical Society of Virginia (MSV), is a professional association of more than 11,000 Virginia physicians, medical students, residents, physician assistants and physician assistant students. It was founded in December 1820, and incorporated in 1824. It has been responsible for the creation of the State Board of Health, the State Board of Medical Examiners, the Board of Medicine and the MSV Review Organization (which has evolved into the Virginia Health Quality Center).
