Percy Wilson (baseball)
Percy Lawrance Wilson (March 3, 1899 – September 7, 1979), nicknamed "Pete", was an American Negro league first baseman in the 1920s. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Wilson attended Leland College. He made his Negro leagues debut in 1923 with the Milwaukee Bears in 1923, and played for the Baltimore Black Sox in 1924. Wilson died in New Orleans in 1979 at age 80. A first baseman, abbreviated 1B, is the player on a baseball or softball team who fields the area nearest first base, the first of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run. Milwaukee Bears
The Milwaukee Bears were a Negro National League team that operated during the 1923 season. It s only season in the league representing Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Founding The team was one of two (the Toledo Tigers being the other) created to fill one of the vacancies created in the NNL after the Cleveland Tate Stars and Pittsburgh Keystones had been dropped after the previous season. It drew much of its personnel from the disbanded Keystones and from the New Orleans Crescent Stars, an independent southern team. Leland College
Leland College was founded in 1870 as a college for blacks in New Orleans, Louisiana, but was open to all races. With . The college facilities had become derelict by the time of listing. In the early 21st century, only the ruins of the two dormitories can be seen faintly through trees. Frame classroom, the President's House, and the Concrete Classrom all disappeared at some time. Holbrook Chamberlain, a philanthropist from Brooklyn established the school. He bought the land and built the school buildings. John Elijah Ford served as the school’s president.
