Percy Verwayne (March 10, 1895 – November, 1968), sometimes spelled Percy Verwayen, was an American stage and film actor. He featured in several films with African American casts including the 1921 REOL Productions film '' The Simp'' and Oscar Micheaux films. He played "Sporting Life" in Porgy, when it was first produced in 1927. He was also in the 1946 Toddy Pictures production '' Fight That Ghost''. He was born in British Guyana. British Guyana
British Guiana was a British colony, part of the mainland British West Indies, which resides on the northern coast of South America. Since 1966 it has been known as the independent nation of Guyana. The first European to encounter Guiana was Sir Walter Raleigh, an English explorer. The film is notable for musical numbers by vocalists Billy Daniels and Sheila Guyse, and for a brief guest appearance by former child star Freddie Bartholomew, who is onscreen as himself for five minutes, telling gags to recharge his post-war career. ''A Daughter of the Congo'' is a 1930 race film directed, written and produced by Oscar Micheaux. The film is loosely based on the novel ''The American Cavalryman'' (1917), by African-American novelist and playwright Henry Francis Downing. It is considered a lost film. Plot Lupelta ( Kathleen Noisette) is a mixed-race Congolese girl who was stolen at birth and raised by a hostile tribe. She is designated to marry a tribal chief, but on her way to the wedding she is abducted by Arab slave traders. Before she is sold into slavery, she is rescued by an African-American military battalion under the command of Captain Paul Dale (Lorenzo Tucker). Dale brings Lupelta to a mission school, where she is successfully acquainted with Western-style civilization. REOL Productions
REOL Productions Corporation was a film production company in New York City from 1921 until 1924 during the silent film era. It released ten films for African American audiences. The company promoted its films by noting they were adaptations of works by African American authors such as a film version of Paul Laurence Dunbar's 1902 novel ''The Sport of the Gods''. Lafayette Theatre manager Robert Levy (producer) managed the film productions with casts from the Lafayette Players. The studio's first release was ''The Sport of the Gods''. The company's '' The Call of His People'' was an adaptation of Audrey Bowser's book about passing '' The Man Who Would Be White''. Plans developed to adapt Charles W. Chesnutt's ''The Marrow of Tradition'' but did not come to fruition. The film company went out of business in 1924. Productions included melodramas, at least one comedy, and two documentaries.
