People Of Nepal (book)
''People of Nepal'' is a 1967 book by Dor Bahadur Bista. The book is the first relatively comprehensive view of the vast array of Nepalese cultures, castes and ethnic groups, with descriptions of their unique customs. It is written by anthropologist Dor Bahadur Bista. Bista visited East Nepal with Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf in the 1950s. ''People of Nepal'' contains his ethnographic notes from the visit. University of Zurich professor Werner M. Egli wrote in his 2014 book ''The Sunuwar of Nepal and their Sense of Communication'' that ''People of Nepal'' is a "classic". Anthropologist and linguist Mark Turin, a professor at the University of British Columbia, wrote in his 2012 book ''A Grammar of the Thangmi Language'' that ''People of Nepal'' was "definitive". Dor Bahadur Bista
Dor Bahadur Bista (born ca. 1924-1928) is a Nepalese anthropologist, social scientist and activist. Bista is considered the Father of Nepalese anthropology, and has published popular books such as '' Fatalism and Development'' and ''People of Nepal''. Bista mysteriously disappeared in 1995. Biography Education Sources vary regarding Bista's date of birth. According to some sources, he was born on 15 April 1928 while there have also been some speculations that he might have been born around 1924, or in 1926. He graduated from Patan High School, after which he attended Tri Chandra College. He completed his Certificate in Indian Ethnography in London. Career While working as a government headmaster in a girls' high school in Patan, Bista became a research assistant to Professor Christoph Furer-Haimendorf of London University who was conducting field research in the area of Solukhumbu. Christoph Von Fürer-Haimendorf
Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf or Christopher von Fürer-Haimendorf FRAI (22 June 1909 – 11 June 1995) was an Austrian ethnologist and professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies at London. He spent forty years studying tribal cultures in Northeast India, in the central region of what is now the state of Telangana and in Nepal. He was married to British ethnologist of India and Nepal, Betty Barnardo. Biography Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf was born in an Austrian aristocratic family. Very early he developed an interest in Indian culture, having read Rabindranath Tagore as a young man. Mark Turin (born 1973) is a British anthropologist, linguist and occasional radio broadcaster who specializes in the Himalayas and the Pacific Northwest. From 2014–2018, he served as Chair of the First Nations and Endangered Languages Program and Acting Co-Director of the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
