Pentre
Pentre is a village, Community (Wales), community and electoral ward near Treorchy in the Rhondda valley, falling within the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. The village's name is taken from the Welsh word Pentref, which translates as homestead, though Pentre is named after a large farm that dominated the area before the coming of industrialisation. Welsh Football League First Division
The Welsh Football League Division One, known as the Nathanielcars.co.uk Welsh League First Division for sponsorship reasons, was a football league in South Wales. It formed the top division of the Welsh Football League and the second level of the Welsh football league system until the 2019–20 season when it was replaced by the Cymru South. From the 2019–20 season it operated at the third level of the Welsh football league system. If the team which finished top of the Division had good enough ground facilities, it was promoted to the Welsh Premier League and was replaced by one of the two teams finishing bottom of the Premiership. Ton Pentre
Ton Pentre () is a village in the Rhondda Valley in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. Historically part of Glamorgan, Ton Pentre, a former industrial coal mining village, is a district of the community of Pentre. The old district of Ystradyfodwg was named after the church at Ton Pentre. Ton Pentre is, perhaps, best known for an event in 1924, when the Duke of York (later George VI of the United Kingdom) played a round of golf with Trade Unionist Frank Hodges. Early and industrial history One of the earliest recorded settlements in Ton Pentre is an Iron Age hillfort located at Maindy Camp. Although initially believed to have been from the Bronze Age, the camp was misidentified due to items from a Bronze Age cairn that were found inside the camp perimeter. Rhondda Valley
Rhondda , or the Rhondda Valley ( cy, Cwm Rhondda ), is a former coalmining area in South Wales, historically in the county of Glamorgan. It takes its name from the River Rhondda, and embraces two valleys – the larger Rhondda Fawr valley (''mawr'' large) and the smaller Rhondda Fach valley (''bach'' small) – so that the singular "Rhondda Valley" and the plural are both commonly used. The area forms part of the South Wales Valleys. From 1897 until 1996 there was a local government district of Rhondda. The former district at its abolition comprised sixteen communities. Since 1996 these sixteen communities of the Rhondda have been part of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough. St Peter's Church, Pentre
St Peter's Church is an Anglican church serving the parish of Ystradyfodwg and the village of Pentre in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. It is located on Pentre Road, with the south-west end of its churchyard fronting the main thoroughfare of Llewellyn Street ( A4058). It was built in the Early English style in 1887–1890 to the designs of ''Kempson and Fowler'' and was designated as a Grade II* listed building in 1991. History The church, known as the 'Cathedral of the Rhondda' due to its size, was commissioned by the Llewellyns of Baglan. Griffith Llewellyn was a co-founder of the Rhondda Engine Works and Madelina (), his wife, was responsible for the building and restoration of several churches. Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council ( cy, Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Rhondda Cynon Taf) is the governing body for Rhondda Cynon Taf, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. The council headquarters are located in the community of Cwm Clydach on the outskirts of Tonypandy. History The council was established on 1 April 1996 under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, covering the area of the three former districts of Rhondda, Cynon Valley, and Taff-Ely (except Pentyrch, which went to Cardiff). Stan Griffiths
Stanley Griffiths (8 February 1911 – 2003) was a Welsh professional footballer who played as an outside forward. He played six times in the Football League during spells with Gillingham and Cardiff City. Career Born in Pentre, Griffiths began his career with Cardiff City in 1931. Unable to break into the first team, he moved to Chester the following year but again made no appearances. He signed for Gillingham in 1933 and made his professional debut in a 2–1 defeat against Torquay United. He made three further league appearances for the side before returning to Cardiff in 1934. During the 1934–35 season, he made two appearances for Cardiff, scoring in both, but was not retained by the club at the end of the season. After spells with Bangor and Folkestone, Griffiths joined Irish side Dundalk. Alan Curtis (footballer)
Alan Thomas Curtis (born 16 April 1954) is a former Wales international footballer, who played as a forward; he is currently the honorary club president of Swansea City. He began his career with Swansea City in 1972, and spent the next seven years with the "Swans", winning promotion out of the Fourth Division in 1977–78 and out of the Third Division in 1978–79. He was then sold on to Leeds United, but struggled in the First Division and was sold back to Swansea in 1980. He helped Swansea to win promotion out of the Second Division in 1980–81, but a period of decline for the club followed and he moved on to Southampton in November 1983. He played on loan at Stoke City towards the end of the 1985–86 season, before he joined Cardiff City in the summer. Johnny Jones (boxer)
Johnny Jones was a Welsh boxer who held the Welsh flyweight title in 1924. His village of residence was Pentre in the Rhondda. Boxing career Little is known of Jones' early career, but his first recorded professional bout was against Charlie Morris on the 31 March 1921 in Liverpool. He won the match by technical knockout in the sixth. Jones then followed this result with another three knockout wins against inexperienced boxers, all in Liverpool. His fifth recorded professional fight was his first in London, and his first loss, this time losing the fight on points to the experienced Frankie Ash. Then on 12 October 1922, just five days after his fifteen round contest with Ash, Jones was back in Liverpool recording a points victory over Willie Woods. With this Jones had done enough to secure a return trip to London, where on 11 November he fought a re-match against Ash. The 2012 Rhondda Cynon Taf Council election took place on Thursday 3 May 2012 to elect members of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council in Wales. Käthe Bosse-Griffiths
Käthe Bosse-Griffiths (16 July 1910 – 4 April 1998) was an eminent Egyptologist. Born in Germany, she moved to Britain as a political refugee and married a Welshman. She became a writer in the Welsh language, and made a unique contribution to Welsh literature. Early years Käthe Bosse was born in Wittenberg in Germany in 1910, the second of four children. Her father, Paul Bosse (1881-1947), was a distinguished gynaecologist and head of Wittenberg town hospital. Her mother Käthe Bosse (née Levin, 1886-1944) was of Jewish parentage, but Bosse was brought up in the Lutheran Church. After completing secondary school in her home town, she was admitted to the University of Munich, where she gained a doctorate in Classics and Egyptology in 1935. Her thesis focused on the human figure in late Egyptian sculpture.
