Pentland Firth
The Pentland Firth ( gd, An Caol Arcach, meaning the Orcadian Strait) is a strait which separates the Orkney Islands from Caithness in the north of Scotland. Despite the name, it is not a firth. Etymology The name is presumed to be a corruption of the Old Norse "Petlandsfjörð", meaning "the fjord of Pictland", and is completely unrelated to the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh. Prior to the Norse occupation of Orkney the strait was known as the "Sea of Orcs" – a reference to the Picts, Pictish tribe who inhabited Orkney. Such was their marine prowess that there are also instances of this name referring to the sea lanes of the entire west coast of Scotland down to Kintyre. One version of the 9th-century ''Historia Brittonum'' states that "the Britons originally filled the whole island with their peoples from the English Channel to the Sea of Orcs". Alexander Pentland
Alexander Augustus Norman Dudley "Jerry" Pentland, (5 August 1894 – 3 November 1983) was an Australian fighter ace in World War I. Born in Maitland, New South Wales, he commenced service as a Lighthorseman with the Australian Imperial Force in 1915, and saw action at Gallipoli. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps the following year, rising to captain. Credited with twenty-three aerial victories, Pentland became the fifth highest-scoring Australian ace of the war, after Robert Little, Stan Dallas, Harry Cobby and Roy King. He was awarded the Military Cross in January 1918 for "conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty" on a mission attacking an aerodrome behind enemy lines, and the Distinguished Flying Cross that August for engaging four hostile aircraft single-handedly. Pentland Ferries
Pentland Ferries is a privately owned, family company which has operated a ferry service between Gills Bay in Caithness, Scotland and St Margaret's Hope on South Ronaldsay in Orkney since May 2001. The company is one of only two major vehicle ferry operators plying within Scotland which are not subsidised by the Scottish Government or local authorities. History Pentland Ferries was founded by its present managing director, Mr Andrew Banks, in 1997. In October that year he purchased the Caledonian MacBrayne passenger and vehicle ferry ''Iona''. Banks obtained a 99-year lease on the Gills Bay terminal, about west of John o' Groats. After two years work improving the site, and further work at St Margaret's Hope, he started operating the short sea crossing with ''Pentalina B'' in May 2001. Pentland Hick
Edwin Pentland Hick (21 July 1919 – 6 March 2016) was a British entrepreneur, author, publisher, and veteran of World War II. Hick is best known for founding the Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo in North Yorkshire Military service Hick served with the Eighth Army as a sergeant in the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1939 to 1945. Pentland Hick Cinemas After World War II, he left the army and returned to his hometown of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, where he was given shares in the failing Aberdeen Walk Picture House when his father, a solicitor, was able to arrange for a client to grant a mortgage for it. Robert Pentland (February 7, 1908 – June 5, 1975) was an American Democratic politician who served in the Missouri General Assembly. He served in the Missouri Senate between 1949 and 1969. Patrick Pentland
Patrick Pentland (born 20 September 1969) is an Irish rock guitarist member of the Canadian rock band Sloan. All four members of Sloan write, produce, and sing their own songs, but Pentland primarily plays lead guitar for most songs. He occasionally plays rhythm guitar, bass, keyboards in the studio, and occasionally plays drums live. Pentland is one of the band's two main singers, as he sings lead on at least a third of the band's songs, including many of their singles on their third to fifth albums, plus back-up/harmony vocals on most of their other songs. Norman Pentland
Norman Pentland (9 September 1912 – 28 October 1972) was a British Labour Member of Parliament. Pentland was educated at Fatfield County School, then in 1926 became a miner, based at the Harraton Colliery. In 1949, he was elected as a checkweighman, and by this time, he was heavily involved in the Durham Area of the National Union of Mineworkers, and the local Labour Party. Pentland served on Chester-le-Street Rural District Council, and was its chair in 1952/53. Also in 1952, he was elected to the executive committee of the Durham Miners. Fred Pentland
Frederick Beaconsfield Pentland (29 July 1883 – 16 March 1962) was an English football player and coach. Pentland played club football in the Football League for Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough, in the Southern Football League for Brentford, Queens Park Rangers and Stoke, and in the Midland League for Halifax Town. He was capped five times for England in 1909. He played as a forward, mainly at outside right. As a manager, he took charge of the German Olympic football team, the France national team, and Spanish club sides Racing de Santander, Athletic Bilbao, Atlético Madrid and Real Oviedo, before returning to England where he briefly managed Barrow. Barbara Pentland C.M. (2 January 1912 – 5 February 2000) was one of the pre-eminent members of the generation of Canadian composers who came to artistic maturity in the years following World War Two. Life and career Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Pentland suffered from a heart disorder which significantly limited both her physical and social activities during her childhood. As a result, she devoted much of her time from an early age to academic pursuits and other intellectual activities. Alex Paul "Sandy" Pentland (born 1951) is an American computer scientist, the Toshiba Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, and serial entrepreneur. Henry John Sinclair, 2nd Baron Pentland (6 June 1907 – 14 February 1984) was the President of thfrom its formation in 1953 and the President of thGurdjieff Foundation of Californiafrom its inception in 1955.
