Pennsylvania Senate Election, 2016
The 2016 elections for the Pennsylvania State Senate were held on November 8, 2016, with all odd-numbered districts being contested. Primary elections were held on April 26, 2016. The term of office for those elected in 2016 will begin when the Senate convenes in January 2017. Pennsylvania State Senators are elected to four-year terms, with 25 of the 50 seats contested every two years. Republicans have controlled the chamber since the 1994 election ( years on election day). Pennsylvania State Senate
The Pennsylvania State Senate is the upper house of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, the Pennsylvania state legislature. The State Senate meets in the State Capitol building in Harrisburg. Senators are elected for four year terms, staggered every two years such that half of the seats are contested at each election. Even numbered seats and odd numbered seats are contested in separate election years. The president pro tempore of the Senate becomes the lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania in the event of the sitting lieutenant governor's removal, resignation or death. In this case the president pro tempore and lieutenant governor would be the same person. The Pennsylvania Senate has been meeting since 1791. The president of the Senate is the lieutenant governor, who has no vote except to break a tie vote. Qualifications Senators must be at least 25 years of age. Rob Teplitz
Robert F. Teplitz (born December 20, 1970) is an American lawyer and politician who served as a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania State Senate for the 15th district, based in the state capital of Harrisburg, from 2013 to 2016. He was the first Democrat to represent this district since 1941, and only the second Democrat to win the seat since 1875. Scott Martin (Pennsylvania Politician)
Scott Martin is an American politician from Pennsylvania currently serving as a Republican member of the Pennsylvania State Senate for the 13th district since January 3, 2017. He previously served as a two-term Lancaster County Commissioner and chairman of the Pennsylvania Republican County Commissioners Caucus. Scott Martin is married to Amber Martin and they have four children. After a six month exploratory committee, on December 11, 2021, Martin announced his intention to seek the office of Governor of Pennsylvania. Lloyd Smucker
Lloyd Kenneth Smucker (born January 23, 1964) is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative from Pennsylvania's 11th congressional district, which includes Lancaster County and most of southern York County. He is a member of the Republican Party and previously represented the 16th district until it was redrawn by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in 2018 due to gerrymandering. Judy Schwank
Judith Schwank (born 1951) is an American politician. A Democrat, she was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate from the 11th district in a special election on March 15, 2011 to succeed the late Michael O'Pake. The district includes the city of Reading and most of eastern Berks County. Education Schwank attended the Pennsylvania State University, where she earned a B.S. and M.Ed. in agricultural education.
