Pennsylvania Route 283 (PA 283), officially State Route 0300 or SR 0300 due to the presence of Interstate 283 (I-283), is a state highway in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. A freeway for nearly its entire length, it connects Harrisburg to Lancaster, paralleling the old U.S. Route 230 (US 230, now partly PA 230). The route follows a generally northwest-southeast direction and is signed east-west. The number was assigned based on the function the route serves as a southeastern extension of I-283, but I-283 and PA 283 are not the same roadway; the two intersect at a partial cloverleaf interchange. Because it is a distinct route from I-283, it is one of only several state routes in Pennsylvania to use a different Location Referencing System designation from its signed number. Highspire is a borough in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,736 at the 2020 census, an increase over the figure of 2,399 tabulated in 2010. It is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area. History It is debated as to whether the town was named for the high spire of the church that could be seen from the Susquehanna River, or for the town in Bavaria where the original settlers and founders of the town were from. Londonderry Township is a township in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,890 at the 2020 census. The township includes the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station, the location of the largest accident in the history of the American nuclear power generating industry, which took place in 1979. The nuclear power plant closed in 2019. History Londonderry Township originally was part of Derry Township. Since the township was so large and difficult to govern, the residents petitioned the court in 1767 to subdivide the land into two parts, the eastern section to remain Derry and the western to be Londonderry. The Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad is a shortline railroad which operates freight and tourist passenger trains between Middletown to Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. A diamond interchange is a common type of road junction, used where a controlled-access highway crosses a minor road. Design The freeway itself is grade-separated from the minor road, one crossing the other over a bridge. Approaching the interchange from either direction, an off-ramp diverges only slightly from the freeway and runs directly across the minor road, becoming an on-ramp that returns to the freeway in similar fashion. Pennsylvania Route 441 (PA 441) is a state route in central Pennsylvania that mostly parallels the Susquehanna River through Lancaster and Dauphin counties. The southern terminus is at PA 999 in the Manor Township hamlet of Washington Boro. The northern terminus is at Paxton Street in Harrisburg.
