Penna is a rural residential locality in the local government area (LGA) of Sorell in the South-east LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about north-west of the town of Sorell. The 2016 census has a population of 422 for the state suburb of Penna. History An early farm in the area was named "Pennar", and this is the most likely source of the name. Others have been suggested, including an Aboriginal word for either "man" or "man and wife". Penna was gazetted as a locality in 1972. Frogmore Post Office opened on 30 October 1914. It was renamed "Penna" next month and closed in 1955. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. The ABS annual report revealed that $24 million in additional expenses accrued due to the outage on the census website. Results from the 2016 census were available to the public on 11 April 2017, from the Australian Bureau of Statistics website, two months earlier than for any previous census. Sorell is a town in Tasmania, Australia, north-east of Hobart. It is located on the Tasman Highway at the junction with the Arthur Highway. Sorell is one of Tasmania's oldest towns, being first settled in 1808 as a small farming community and becoming an official township in 1821. Sorell Council is a local government body in Tasmania, situated in the south-east of the state. The Sorell local government area is classified as rural and has a population of 15,218, the major centres of the region include Dodges Ferry, Dunalley, Primrose Sands and the principal town of Sorell. History and attributes The Sorell Municipal Council was established on 1 January 1862, and the first council elected March 26 1862. Sorell is classified as rural, agricultural and very large under the Australian Classification of Local Governments. Midway Point is a residential locality in the local government area (LGA) of Sorell in the South-east LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about south-west of the town of Sorell. The 2016 census recorded a population of 2859 for the state suburb of Midway Point. It is located on a small peninsula with Orielton Lagoon on its eastern side and Pittwater on its southern and western sides. The suburb meets the mid-way point of the Sorell Causeway from Hobart to Sorell, hence the name. Mcgees Bridge is connected to Midway Point on the Pittwater side.
