Penn Township is a township in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 892 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Williamsport Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Penn Township was formed in 1828 when Muncy Township was divided for the fourth time. It is named for Penn Township in Berks County, which in turn is named for William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. Tobias and Isaac Kepner had migrated to eastern Lycoming County from Berks County and wanted their new home to have the same name as their old home. Much of the history of Penn Township can be found in the history of the Big Runaway and Muncy Township. Lumbering was the dominant industry in Penn Township during the mid-to-late 19th century. A man-made lake, Beaver Lake, was built to supply water power for a sawmill. The sawmill has long since disappeared but the lake remains. Shrewsbury Township is a township in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 419 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Williamsport Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Shrewsbury Township was formed from part of Muncy Township in 1804. It was originally much larger in size and included a large part of what is now Sullivan County until 1847. It is named for Shrewsbury Township, New Jersey. Some of the first settlers, the Little and Bennett families, migrated to Lycoming County from New Jersey and wanted their new home to have the same name as their old home. Peter Corson, also from New Jersey, was one of the first settlers to establish a home in the area, and he was quite successful. Corson and his wife had five sons and three daughters, and within less than 100 years they had descendants that were numbered by the hundred. Picture Rocks is a borough in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The 2020 census measured the population at 640. It is part of the Williamsport, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. Notable person Picture Rocks is the birthplace of Warren Sprout, who won a shooting gold medal at the 1912 Olympics. History Picture Rocks was incorporated as a borough on September 27, 1875 from land formerly included in Wolf Township. However, its recorded history began a century earlier. The earliest settlers arrived in 1773 and observed Indian pictographs (no longer extant) in the Muncy Creek valley. The borough occupies the site of a Munsee Indian village, evidenced by arrowheads and other relics found in the vicinity of the creek. History Wolf Township was formed from part of Muncy Township by the Court of Quarter Sessions of the Peace of Lycoming County in 1834. The township is named for George Wolf, governor of Pennsylvania from 1829 to 1835. The boroughs of Hughesville and Picture Rocks are on land that was taken from Wolf Township. Franklin Township is a township in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 901 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Williamsport Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Franklin Township, named for Benjamin Franklin, was formed from part of Moreland Township in 1822. It included what is now Jordan Township until that was formed 32 years later. Another portion of Franklin Township was cut away in 1828 to form Penn Township. The earliest settlers to Franklin Township were farmers. They arrived in the early 19th century and cleared the hills and valleys. Many of the farms established by these early settlers are still thriving today. Sawmill
A sawmill (saw mill, saw-mill) or lumber mill is a facility where logs are cut into lumber. Modern sawmills use a motorized saw to cut logs lengthwise to make long pieces, and crosswise to length depending on standard or custom sizes (dimensional lumber).
