Penn State Wrestling
The Penn State Nittany Lions wrestling program is an NCAA Division I Wrestling team competing as members of the Big Ten Conference. The team is coached by Olympic Champion Cael Sanderson (Athens 2004) and have maintained status as one of the top collegiate wrestling programs in the country, with a four-year NCAA Team Championship streak from 2011-2014, and an additional four-year NCAA Team Championship streak from 2016-2019. From February 22, 2015 to November 22, 2019, the team achieved a 60 dual meet win streak. Former wrestlers include Dan Hodge Trophy Winners Kerry McCoy (1997), Zain Retherford (2017, 2018), Bo Nickal (2019), and Olympic Champion David Taylor (2012, 2014). History The Penn State wrestling program was established in 1909 and was declared national dual meet champion in 1921. Cael Sanderson
Cael Norman Sanderson ( ; born June 20, 1979) is an American former folkstyle and freestyle wrestler who is the current head coach of Penn State University's wrestling team. As a wrestler, he won an Olympic Gold medal and was undefeated in four years of college wrestling at Iowa State University (ISU) (159–0), becoming a four-time NCAA Division I champion (1999–2002). He is the only wrestler in NCAA Division I history to go undefeated in official matches with more than 100 wins. ''Sports Illustrated'' named his college career as the second most impressive college sports feat of all-time, behind the setting of four world records by Jesse Owens in a single hour at the 1935 Big Ten track and field conference championship meet. Iowa State Cyclones Wrestling
The Iowa State Cyclones wrestling team represents Iowa State University (ISU) and competes in the Big 12 Conference of NCAA Division I. The Cyclones are 8 time National Champions, 17 time National Runners-Up, and have 45 Top 4 "Trophy" Finishes. The team is coached by Kevin Dresser. The Cyclones host their home meets at Hilton Coliseum on Iowa State's campus. Iowa State became the second collegiate wrestling program to reach 1,100 dual wins on January 23, 2022. Coaches Charles Mayser (1916–1923) Charles Mayser was the founding father of Iowa State wrestling. In addition to his wrestling coaching duties, “Uncle Charlie” performed coaching duties in baseball and football, as well as being the athletic director. Bubba Jenkins
Bubba Jenkins (born February 5, 1988) is an American mixed martial artist and former amateur wrestler. He currently competes in the featherweight division of Professional Fighters League. He has also notably competed for Bellator MMA, Absolute Championship Berkut and Brave Combat Federation, where he was a former champion. Roman Guillermo Bravo-Young (born January 28, 1999) is a Mexican-American freestyle and graduated folkstyle wrestler who competes at 57 kilograms. In freestyle, he was a U20 Pan American champion and currently represents Mexico, where he is a two-time National champion. As a folkstyle wrestler, Bravo-Young was the 2021 and 2022 NCAA Division I national champion at 133 pounds, as well as a four-time All-American out of the Pennsylvania State University. Anthony Cassar
Anthony Cassar (born March 9, 1996) is an American freestyle wrestler and graduated folkstyle wrestler. He is a one-time NCAA Division I champion and a one-time Big Ten Conference champion out of Penn State University, as well as a one-time NJSIAA title holder as a high schooler. Folkstyle career High school Raised in Rocky Hill, New Jersey, Cassar started wrestling at around the age of 7 to 8. He attended Montgomery High School in New Jersey. During his freshman, sophomore and junior years, he never qualified for state and compiled a record of 73 wins and 30 losses. Edward Lee Ruth (born October 21, 1990) is an American former professional mixed martial artist and freestyle and folkstyle wrestler. He competed in the Middleweight division of Bellator MMA. As a folkstyle wrestler, he was a three-time NCAA Division I national champion. Early life Ruth was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He is a 2009 graduate of Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey. Frank Molinaro
Frank Molinaro (born December 27, 1988) is a nationally recognized American wrestler and coach. He was the 2012 NCAA Champion with an undefeated season record of 33–0 at 149 pounds, helping him become a four-time NCAA Division I All-American. In 2016, Molinaro won the US Olympic Team Trials, earning the ability to qualify and represent the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympics at 65 kg. Sanshiro Abe
is a Japanese former wrestler. He competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics, where he finished in ninth place in the 57kg freestyle class. Abe competed collegiately for Penn State, where he was an NCAA champion and four-time All-American.
