Penkridge Railway Station
Penkridge railway station is a station serving the village of Penkridge in Staffordshire, England. It is situated on the Birmingham branch of the West Coast Main Line. To the north, the line continues towards Stafford. To the south, the line continues towards the city of Wolverhampton. The station is operated by London Northwestern Railway, who run all of its train services. History The original station was built by the Grand Junction Railway and opened in 1837. Baron Hatherton allowed trains to run across his land on the condition that two trains a day stopped at Penkridge. When closure of the station was proposed in 1962, the incumbent Baron Hatherton threatened to withdraw the right to cross his land if the station was closed. Nearby to Penkridge is a former mineral branch line to the nearby village of Huntington. It served a Colliery until the 1980s. Penkridge
Penkridge ( ) is a village and civil parishes in England, civil parish in South Staffordshire, South Staffordshire District in Staffordshire, England. It is to the south of Stafford, north of Wolverhampton, west of Cannock and east of Telford. The nearby town of Brewood is also not far away. The wealthiest establishment in Penkridge in the Middle Ages, its collegiate church building survived the Chantry#Abolition of Chantries Acts, 1545 and 1547, abolition of the chantries and is the tallest structure in the village centre. Baron Hatherton
Baron Hatherton, of Hatherton in the County of Stafford, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1835 for the politician Edward Littleton, Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1833 to 1834. Born Edward Walhouse, he assumed in 1812 by Royal licence the surname of Littleton in lieu of his patronymic on succeeding to the estates of his great-uncle Sir Edward Littleton, 4th and last Baronet, of Teddesley Hall. He was also heir to the substantial Walhouse estates and interests, which included Hatherton Hall, near Cannock, then in an exclave of Wolverhampton. His wealth was based upon landed estates centred on Penkridge in southern Staffordshire, mines at Great Wyrley and Bloxwich, quarries and sandpits, brick yards and residential housing, mainly in Walsall. The London and North Western Railway (LNWR, L&NWR) was a British railway company between 1846 and 1922. In the late 19th century, the L&NWR was the largest joint stock company in the United Kingdom. Huntington is a civil parish and former mining village in Staffordshire, on the outskirts of Cannock Chase. It lies on the A34 road just north of Cannock and is surrounded by woodland.
