Peninsula, Long Beach, California
Peninsula is a neighborhood in Long Beach, California. It separates Alamitos Bay from the Pacific Ocean. It is adjacent to Belmont Shore and across the water from Naples. History The first homes were built between 1902 and 1904. The Pacific Electric Long Beach-Alamitos Bay-Seal Beach Line ran along the Peninsula and across a trestle to Seal Beach, where it connected with the Balboa Line. This track was abandoned in 1940. Sand is moved from the beach near the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier to the Peninsula to replenish what is carried away by the prevailing currents. Pacific Electric
The Pacific Electric Railway Company, nicknamed the Red Cars, was a privately owned mass transit system in Southern California consisting of electrically powered streetcars, interurban cars, and buses and was the largest electric railway system in the world in the 1920s. Organized around the city centers of Los Angeles and San Bernardino, it connected cities in Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Bernardino County and Riverside County. San Gabriel River (California)
The San Gabriel River is a mostly urban waterway flowing southward through Los Angeles and Orange Counties, California in the United States. It is the central of three major rivers draining the Greater Los Angeles Area, the others being the Los Angeles River and Santa Ana River. Edward Killingsworth
Edward Killingsworth FAIA (1917–2004) was an American architect. He is best known as a participant in Arts & Architecture's Case Study program in the mid-1950s. He designed and built Case Study House #25, "The Frank House," in Naples, California. He also designed numerous luxury hotels all over the world and a large part of the California State University, Long Beach campus. In the architecture world, his name is associated with Southern California Post-and-Beam Mid-Century Modern. Biography Killingsworth was born in Taft on Nov. 4, 1917. Following the discovery of oil on Signal Hill in 1921, his oilman father moved the family south to Long Beach. Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier is a pier in Belmont Heights, Long Beach, California. Summary Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier is a popular site for fishing and strolling located at 35 39th Place. Sport Fishing can be accessed at the end of the pier, as well as a snack stand and bait shop. History A rock formation named "Devil's Gate" once stood at the pier's location. In 1908 the citizens of Belmont Heights asked the city to build a pier. The pier has been called the Grand Avenue Pier, the Belmont Heights Pier and Devil's Gate Pier in its history. Balboa Line
The Balboa Line was the southernmost route of the Pacific Electric Railway. It ran between Downtown Los Angeles and the Balboa Peninsula in Orange County by way of North Long Beach, though the route was later cut back to the Newport Dock. It was designated as route 17. History Originally planned by the Pacific Electric, the line was turned over to the Los Angeles Inter-Urban Electric Railway in 1904. The company opened the line to Huntington Beach on July 4, 1904, reaching Newport Wharf the following year. The Los Angeles Inter-Urban was acquired by Pacific Electric in 1908. The Newport Beach to Balboa segment was reduced to a single daily round trip in June 1940 and was fully abandoned on November 18 of that year.
