Penfold Park
Penfold Park () is a public park managed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club in Sha Tin, Hong Kong. It is named after Major-General Bernard Penfold, the first general manager of the Jockey Club who was in office from 1972 to 1979. The park is located in the centre (within the track) of the Sha Tin Racecourse with a gross area of over 20 acres. It features green areas, as well as pools used by various waterbirds. People around the area often go there to have a walk. There are many painted horse statues and artworks. It is closed during horse racing days and Mondays. History The park was briefly called Infield Park at opening on 11 May 1979. The chairman of the Jockey Club Board of Stewards, during the Stewards' annual general meeting on 17 September that year, announced that the park would be named in honour of Major-General Bernard Penfold. Sha Tin
Sha Tin, also spelt Shatin, is a neighbourhood along Shing Mun River in the eastern New Territories, Hong Kong. Administratively, it is part of the Sha Tin District. Sha Tin is one of the neighbourhoods of the Sha Tin New Town project. The new town was founded in 1973 under the New Towns Development Programme of the Hong Kong government. Its current name was named after the nearby village of Sha Tin Wai. The literal English translation is 'Sand Fields'. History Tai Wai Village, located in Tai Wai, next to Sha Tin, and the oldest and largest walled village in Sha Tin District, was built in 1574, during the Ming Dynasty. Before British rule in Hong Kong, the area of Sha Tin and its vicinity was referred to as Lek Yuen (lit. "source of trickling" or "source of clear water"). Hong Kong Jockey Club
The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) is one of the oldest institutions in Hong Kong, having been founded in 1884. In 1959, it was granted a Royal Charter and renamed The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club (). The institution reverted to its original name in 1996 due to the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong in 1997. Membership of the club is by nomination and election. It is a non-profit organisation providing horse racing, sporting and betting entertainment in Hong Kong. It holds a government-granted monopoly in providing pari-mutuel betting on horse racing, the Mark Six lottery, and fixed odds betting on overseas football events. Racecourse Station (MTR)
Racecourse () is a List of MTR stations, station on the of Hong Kong. It was opened on 1 October 1985 and is only used on race days and special days held in the Sha Tin Racecourse. There are single journey tickets to the station available separately. It is located between and stations along the East Rail line's Racecourse branch, and is situated parallel to along the mainline. History Racecourse station originally opened along with the eponymous racecourse on 7 October 1978. Fo Tan () is a station on the of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system in Hong Kong. It is located in the Fo Tan area of Sha Tin District, between and stations on the East Rail line's main branch. The is located parallel to Fo Tan, on the line's Racecourse branch. The passenger station serves some apartment buildings, villages, and a medium-sized industrial zone, as well as the of the MTRC. During rush hour, some northbound trains terminate at this station before departing southwards. Sha Tin District
Sha Tin District is one of the 18 districts of Hong Kong. As one of the 9 districts located in the New Territories, it covers the areas of Sha Tin, Tai Wai, Ma On Shan, Fo Tan, Siu Lek Yuen, and Ma Liu Shui. Bernard Penfold
Major-General Robert Bernard Penfold Order of the Bath, CB Royal Victorian Order, LVO (19 December 1916 – 22 April 2015) was a British Army officer who commanded Aldershot Command, South East District. Military career Penfold was Commissioned officer, commissioned into the Leicestershire Regiment in 1936 and then transferred to the Indian Army. He served in World War II as an officer in Iraqforce and after the War transferred to the Royal Artillery. He became commanding Officer of 6th Battalion King's African Rifles in Tanganyika (territory), Tanganyika in 1959. He was appointed Commander of 127th Infantry Brigade in 1962, Security Operations Advisor to the High Commissioner in Aden during the Aden Emergency in 1964 and Chief of Defence Staff, Kenya Defence Forces in 1966. Sha Tin Racecourse
Sha Tin Racecourse is one of the two racecourses for horse racing in Hong Kong. It is located in Sha Tin District, Sha Tin in the New Territories. It is managed by Hong Kong Jockey Club. Penfold Park is encircled by the track, and the Hong Kong Sports Institute is located immediately south of the property. Equestrian competitions at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics were held from 9 August to 21 August at the Hong Kong Sports Institute and Sheung Yue River in Hong Kong. It was the second time that the equestrian events were hosted by a member of the IOC other than the member hosting the main games (although this time the events were technically held in the same country as the main games).
