Pend Oreille Valley Railroad
The Pend Oreille Valley Railroad is a shortline railroad located in Usk, in northeast Washington. Route The POVA serves the communities of Usk, Dalkena, Newport, Oldtown, Priest River, Laclede and has trackage rights from Dover- Sandpoint via the Union Pacific Railroad. The Route from Usk to Newport is former Milwaukee Road trackage and Newport-Dover is former Great Northern RY trackage. The line used to go to Metaline Falls but was abandoned north of Usk in 2016 History The line was built by the Idaho and Washington Northern Railroad between 1907 and 1911. The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (MILW) acquired the line in 1916. The MILW entered financial difficulty in the 1970s and the Newport - Metaline Falls section was sold to Port of Pend Oreille following the company's downsizing. Eastern Washington
Eastern Washington is the region of the U.S. state of Washington located east of the Cascade Range. It contains the city of Spokane (the second largest city in the state), the Tri-Cities, the Columbia River and the Grand Coulee Dam, the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and the fertile farmlands of the Yakima Valley and the Palouse. Metaline Falls, Washington
Metaline Falls is a town in Pend Oreille County, Washington, United States. The population was 272 at the 2020 census. History Evidence of early indigenous peoples in the area dates to some 12,000 years ago. By 1810, European fur traders were crossing the area. The settlement of Metaline Falls was founded in 1900, with most of its residents then employed by the Mammoth and Morning lead-zinc mines. Metaline Falls was officially incorporated on May 3, 1911. The name Metaline comes from the abundance of lead ore, galena, found in the region. Though these lead deposits were known since 1869, mining did not commence until 1886. Then in 1910, Metaline Falls was connected with the Idaho and Washington Northern Railroad. The Lehigh Portland Cement Co. plant was soon built, taking advantage of the region's limestone deposits. Bonner County is a county in the northern part of the U.S. state of Idaho. As of the 2020 census, the population was 47,110. The county seat and largest city is Sandpoint. Partitioned from Kootenai County and established in 1907, it was named for Edwin L. Bonner, a ferry operator. Bonner County comprises the Sandpoint, Idaho Micropolitan Statistical Area. Ione, Washington
Ione is a town in Pend Oreille County, Washington, United States. The population was 428 at the 2020 census. History Ione was first settled in 1894 by homesteader Elmer Hall. Ione was officially incorporated on January 3, 1910. The timber industry played a major role in Ione's history. In the early 1900's, Frederick A. Blackwell's Panhandle Lumber Company opened the inland northwest's first all-electric sawmill in Ione. The timber-based economy persisted for nearly 100 years in Ione, lasting until 1995 when the Vaagen Brothers' sawmill, the last major sawmill in the country, closed down. The railroad reached Ione in 1910 when Blackwell built the Idaho & Washington Northern Railroad, connecting Ione with Metaline Falls in the north and Newport in the south. When Pend Oreille County was established in 1911, Ione was one of four towns vying to land the county seat, along with Newport, Cusick, and Usk, with the honors being awarded to Newport in 1912.
