Pencilo
Pencilo ( my, ပန်ဆယ်လို; born Eaint Poe Ou ( my, အိမ့်ပိုးဥ), on 14 April 1990) is a Burmese writer and pro-democracy activist. She is best known for criticizing the Tatmadaw and taking up politically sensitive cases against the Burmese military junta and generals. Early life and education Pencilo was born on 14 April 1990 in Myaungmya, Ayeyarwady Region, Myanmar. She graduated with B.Sc. in Industrial Chemistry from Dagon University in 2011. Career and activism Pencilo has written posts criticizing the military and the former military-backed government of President Thein Sein, which have occasionally come under fire. A core supporter of the National League for Democracy, she participated in the election campaign in November 2015. She began her literary career in 2016, publishing a book titled ''Under The Mask'' (မျက်နှာဖုံးတွေရဲ့အောက်). The book became one of the best-selling books of 2016. In ... Kyaw Min Yu
Kyaw Min Yu ( my, ကျော်မင်းယု; also known as Ko Jimmy; 13 February 1969 – 23 July 2022) was a Burmese writer, political prisoner, and a member of the 88 Generation Students Group. He was executed in July 2022 after being sentenced to death for activism against the junta that seized power in a coup in 2021. Career Activism Kyaw Min Yu rose to prominence during the 8888 Uprising, as a student activist. He was imprisoned for 15 years, from 1988 to 2003, for participating in the 8888 Uprising, and later spent another five years in prison after protesting fuel price hikes with the 88 Generation Students Group in August 2007. Mg Mg Aye ( my, မောင်မောင်အေး; also spelt Maung Maung Aye; born 29 June 1978) is a Burmese television host and MC. He has been the host for several Burmese TV programs and received acceptance of audience for the reality game show ''Puzzle Palace''. Mg Mg Aye was a judge on '' Myanmar's Got Talent''. He is the founder of Myanmar's first entertainment and game company, Dream Boat Entertainment. Mg Mg Aye is also active as a philanthropist with the notable charitable organization We Love Yangon. Min Ko Naing
Paw Oo Tun ( my, ပေါ်ဦးထွန်း ); better known by his alias Min Ko Naing, ( , lit. "conqueror of kings") is a leading democracy activist and dissident from Myanmar. He has spent most of the years since 1988 imprisoned by the state for his opposition activities. ''The New York Times'' has described him as Burma's "most influential opposition figure after Daw Aung San Suu Kyi". 2021 Myanmar Coup D'état
A coup d'état in Myanmar began on the morning of 1 February 2021, when democratically elected members of the country's ruling party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), were deposed by the Tatmadaw—Myanmar's military—which then vested power in a military junta. The State Administration Council ( my, နိုင်ငံတော်စီမံအုပ်ချုပ်ရေးကောင်စီ; abbreviated SAC or နစက) is the military junta currently governing Myanmar, established by Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Min Aung Hlaing following the February 2021 coup d'état. The Council is chaired by Min Aung Hlaing. It has formed a provisional administration, also led by Min Aung Hlaing as Prime Minister of Myanmar. Myanmar Penal Code
The Penal Code of Myanmar is the official criminal code of Myanmar. The code was enacted on 1 May 1861 during British rule in Burma and is divided into 23 chapters. The Penal Code of Myanmar is nearly identical to the Indian Penal Code, due to their shared origins under British rule. Sections 505(a) and 505(b) of the Penal Code are commonly used against journalists, activists, and protestors. As of 30 April 2020, 8 of the 50 convicted political prisoners were serving sentences for violating one or both of said sections. In the aftermath of the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état, the military junta amended section 505(a) to criminalise "fake news" and "incitement" against the military. Lawyers who represent activists and politicians have also been charged under section 505(a).
