Pembroke, Bermuda
Pembroke Parish is one of the nine parishes of Bermuda. It is named after English aristocrat William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke (1580–1630). It occupies most of the short peninsula which juts from the central north coast of Bermuda's main island, and surrounds the city of Hamilton, Bermuda, Hamilton on three sides (the fourth being taken up by the shore of Hamilton Harbour, Bermuda, Hamilton Harbour). As such, its shape bears some passing resemblance to the county of Pembrokeshire in Wales. The peninsula juts into the eastern side of the Great Sound, Bermuda, Great Sound, the large expanse of water which dominates the geography of western Bermuda. In the east, Pembroke meets Devonshire Parish, Bermuda, Devonshire Parish. As with most of Bermuda's parishes, it covers just over 2.3 square miles (about 6.0 km2 or 1500 acres). Saltus Grammar School
Saltus Grammar School, founded in 1880, is an independent school in Pembroke Parish, Bermuda. It was a boys' school until 1992, when it became co-educational. It has two campuses, one for the Lower Primary (Foundation - Year 2) and one for the Upper Primary, Middle School and Secondary. The school is a member of the US-based National Association of Independent Schools and also the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools. The schools motto, displayed on its crest, is "Labor omnia vincit" meaning "Work conquers all". History Samuel Saltus, after whom the school is named, was a descendant of Richard Norwood who first surveyed the Bermuda Islands in 1622. At his death in 1880 Saltus left a bequest in his will for the founding of a boys' school, but it was not until 6 February 1888 that Saltus Grammar School first opened its doors in the Pembroke Sunday School Building at the corner of North and Angle Streets in Hamilton, with thirty-five students enrolled. Bermuda High School
The Bermuda High School is a private school in Pembroke, Bermuda. It was founded in 1894. It is an all-girls school from the Early Years Programme to Year Eleven, and co-educational for the two-year IB Diploma Programme. Foundations BHS was founded in 1896 by Grosvenor Tucker, who found that not everyone could afford to send their daughters to England. The school was based on the lines of Cheltenham Ladies' College in England. The school was situated on Reid Street and in the beginning had 60 students and three teachers. Matilda Tothill was the first head mistress. William Barr donated the premises, Russel Hastings donated a large amount of money to the school and Mrs. Middleton was an art teacher at BHS for over 30 years. ''The Royal Gazette'' is a Bermudian, English-language daily newspaper. Founded in 1828, it is Bermuda's only daily newspaper (not published on Sundays and public holidays). History The first issues of The Royal Gazette, Bermuda Commercial and General Advertiser and Recorder were published in January 1828. The company bore no relation to an earlier publication named the Bermuda Gazette and Weekly Advertiser founded by Joseph Stockdale in 1782 nor an earlier Royal Gazette founded by Mr Edmund Ward in 1809. Its founder Donald MacPhee Lee, an immigrant to Bermuda from Prince Edward Island in Canada, served as editor until his death in 1883, whereupon it was operated by his son and later his daughter. Government House, Bermuda
Government House is the official residence of the governor of Bermuda. It is located on Langton Hill, overlooking the North Shore in Hamilton, Pembroke. Government House is also the official residence of the Bermudian head of state (currently King Charles III) when staying in Bermuda.
