The Pembina River is a tributary of the Red River of the North, approximately long,U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map accessed June 8, 2011 in southern Manitoba in Canada and northeastern North Dakota in the United States. It drains an area (about 8500 square kilometers) of the prairie country along the Canada–US border, threading the Manitoba-North Dakota border eastward to the Red River. Via the Red River, Lake Winnipeg and the Nelson River, it is part of the watershed of Hudson Bay. It rises in several streams on the eastern side of the Turtle Mountains on both sides of the international border. The streams converge near Neelin, Manitoba and flow initially northeast, then southeast along the west side of the Pembina Hills into Cavalier County in northeastern North Dakota. Pembina () is a city in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 512 at the 2020 census. Pembina is located south of the Canada–US border. Interstate 29 passes on the west side of Pembina, leading north to the Canada–US border at Emerson, Manitoba and south to the cities of Grand Forks and Fargo. The Pembina-Emerson Border Crossing is the busiest between Blaine, Washington and Detroit, Michigan and the fifth busiest along the Canada-United States border. It is one of three 24-hour ports of entry in North Dakota, the others being Portal and Dunseith. The Noyes–Emerson Border Crossing, located to the east on the Minnesota side of the Red River, also processed cross border traffic until its closure in 2006. Cavalier County, North Dakota
Cavalier County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. It is south of the Canada–US border with Manitoba. As of the 2020 census, the population was 3,704. Its county seat is Langdon. The city of Cavalier is in nearby Pembina County. History The Dakota Territory legislature created Cavalier County on January 4, 1873 with territory annexed from Pembina County, but did not organize the county government structure at that time. It was named for Charles Cavileer (or Cavalier) of Pembina, an early settler. The county organization was effected on July 8, 1884. Its boundaries were altered in 1883 and in 1887. After petitioning the Territorial Governor for permission to organize the county, Patrick McHugh, W. Hudson Matthews, and L.C. Noracong met on July 8, 1884. On July 26 the new county officials met for the second time and chose Noracong as Chairman of the Board with William H. Doyle and Matthews as Commissioners. Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area
Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area is a unit of the North Dakota state park system located along the Pembina River, west of Walhalla. The area offers river kayaking and multi-use trails for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and off-road vehicles. Funding was approved for the area to become North Dakota's 14th state park in May 2023. Ecology The Pembina Gorge is home to the highest numbers and concentrations of rare species known in North Dakota. These include 21 animal species and 30 plant species of which eight occur nowhere else in the state. Over 480 species of vascular plants, representing a third of North Dakota flora, may be found. A count of 209 floristic species, which included prior efforts, were collected in 2014. Pembina Valley Provincial Park is a provincial park in southern Manitoba, Canada. It is located 47 kilometres south-west of Morden, Manitoba, Canada on Highway 3, Highway 31, and Highway 201, and covers approximately . The park is considered to be a Class III protected area under the IUCN protected area management categories. The park was officially opened on October 5, 2001 by Premier Gary Doer and James Richardson, representing the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Pembina Valley Provincial Park is Manitoba's 75th provincial park. The park contains approximately 12.7 km of hiking trails. In 2009, a 24 m (80 ft) single-span steel bridge and 9 m (30 ft) observation tower were added to the park. A Rocha Canada operates a Field Study Centre on 100 acres immediately adjacent to the park, and assists parks staff in conducting interpretive walks. It drains an area of the prairie country near the Canada–US border in the extreme northeast corner of the state in the watershed of the Red River. It rises in eastern Cavalier County and flows in a direct course east-northeast into Pembina County, passing the towns of Cavalier, Neche and Bathgate. It joins the Pembina from the south approximately upstream from the mouth of the Pembina on the Red River. Upstream of Cavalier, the river passes through Icelandic State Park, where Renwick Dam causes it to form Lake Renwick. Below the dam, foot trails follow the river in the Gunlogson Arboretum Nature Preserve.
