Pelican (band)
Pelican is an American post-metal quartet from Chicago, Illinois. Established in 2001, the band is known for their atmospheric and almost entirely instrumental style. They have released six studio albums and six EPs. History and style The band is known for dense combinations of different melodies and extended track lengths. It may be classified as stoner rock, doom metal, or post-rock. Larry Herweg, Trevor de Brauw, and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec are also three members of the band Tusk. Pelican previously signed to Hydra Head Records but is currently signed with Southern Lord Records roster. Pelican toured with Wolves in the Throne Room to support their first EP for Southern Lord, ''Ephemeral'', released on June 6, 2009. ''What We All Come to Need'' was released on October 27, 2009. Greg Anderson and Aaron Turner both appeared on the album. In celebration of the new album, the "Pelican Burger" was served at Kuma's Corner for one night. Heavy Metal Music
Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and United States. With roots in blues rock, psychedelic rock and acid rock, heavy metal bands developed a thick, monumental sound characterized by distortion (music), distorted guitars, extended guitar solos, emphatic Beat (music), beats and loudness. Thrill Jockey is an American independent record label established by former Atlantic Records A&R representative Bettina Richards and based in Chicago. ''Pitchfork'' (formerly ''Pitchfork Media'') is an American online music publication (currently owned by Condé Nast) that was launched in 1995 by writer Ryan Schreiber as an independent music blog. Schreiber started Pitchfork while working at a record store in suburban Minneapolis, and the website earned a reputation for its extensive coverage of indie rock music. It has since expanded and covers all kinds of music, including pop. Pitchfork was sold to Condé Nast in 2015, although Schreiber remained its editor-in-chief until he left the website in 2019. Record Store Day is an annual event inaugurated in 2007 and held on one Saturday (typically the third) every April and every Black Friday in November to "celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store". The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores around the world. A number of records are pressed specifically for Record Store Day, with a list of releases for each country, and are only distributed to shops participating in the event. ''Forever Becoming'' is the fifth studio album by American post-metal band Pelican (band), Pelican. The album was released on October 15, 2013 through Southern Lord Records. ''Forever Becoming'' marks Pelican's first release to not include founding guitarist Laurent Schroeder-Lebec. Prior to the album's release, Pelican released an online stream of "Immutable Dusk" in July, 2013. "Deny the Absolute" was released as a stand-alone single in August, 2013, and later as a music video in December, 2014. Tombs is an American heavy metal band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2007. Thus far, the group has released five full-length records, '' Winter Hours'', '' Path of Totality'', '' Savage Gold'', ''The Grand Annihilation'', and ''Under Sullen Skies''. Roadburn Festival
Roadburn Festival is an international music festival held in Tilburg, Netherlands every April since 1999. It was set up as a spin-off from the Roadburn music blog founded by Jurgen van den Brand and Walter Hoeijmakers. Originally focused on stoner rock, Roadburn grew into a major event spanning the entire spectrum of heavy rock and experimental music. The key staff involved with running the festival are Frens Frijns (managing director, CEO of Tilburg's 013 venue), Walter Hoeijmakers (promoter, artistic director) and Becky Laverty (press, communication, side programme). Since 2014, Roadburn Festival publishes a daily fanzine that is distributed freely to its attendees. ''Ataraxia/Taraxis'' is the fifth EP by American post-metal band Pelican, released through Southern Lord Records on April 10, 2012. ''Ataraxia/Taraxis'' was Pelican's final release to include founding guitarist Laurent Schroeder-Lebec. Background and composition In 2010, two years prior to the release of the ''Ataraxia/Taraxis'' EP, founding member and guitarist Laurent Schroeder-Lebec retired from touring with Pelican. In an official press release, it was clarified that the parting was amicable, and that he chose to focus on his family and career instead of the band. After concluding recording of ''Ataraxia/Taraxis'', Schroeder-Lebec admitted that his "heart wasn't fully in" preparation for the next full-length album, and he removed himself from the composing process.
