English Language
English is a West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, with its earliest forms spoken by the inhabitants of early medieval England. John Pelham (bishop)
John Thomas Pelham (21 June 1811 – 1 May 1894), styled ''The Honourable'' from birth, was a British Anglican clergyman. Background and education He was the third son of Thomas Pelham, 2nd Earl of Chichester and his wife Lady Mary Henrietta Juliana Osborne, eldest daughter of Francis Osborne, 5th Duke of Leeds. His older brothers were Henry Pelham, 3rd Earl of Chichester and Frederick Thomas Pelham, a rear-admiral in the Royal Navy. Pelham was educated at Westminster School and went then to Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1832 and Master of Arts four years thereafter. In 1857, he received a Doctor of Divinity by the University of Oxford. Career Pelham was ordained by Charles James Blomfield, at that time Bishop of London, in 1834 and assumed the post as deacon of Eastergate, befriending Henry Edward Manning. Pelham Humfrey
Pelham Humfrey (''Humphrey, Humphrys'') (1647 in London – 14 July 1674 in Windsor) was an English composer. He was the first of the new generation of English composers at the beginning of the Restoration to rise to prominence. Life and career Pelham Humfrey was born in 1647. By the age of seventeen Humfrey's anthems were evidently in use and he was sent by the King to study in Paris, probably in January 1665 where he was greatly influenced by music at the French Court. On the basis of the music he wrote on his return, he also assimilated the more expressive vocal style of Carissimi. He later succeeded Henry Cooke (his father-in-law) as Master of the Children of the Chapel Royal and also became composer to the Court. Humfrey died at the age of 27, but along with Matthew Locke exerted a strong influence on his peers even at his young age, including William Turner, Henry Purcell, and John Blow. ''Downton Abbey'' is a 2019 British historical drama film written by Julian Fellowes, series creator and writer of the television series of the same name, and directed by Michael Engler. The film is produced by Carnival Films and Perfect World Pictures, and it continues the storyline from the series, with much of the original cast returning. The film, set in 1927, depicts a royal visit to the Crawley family's stately home in Yorkshire. As royal staff members descend on Downton, an assassin has also arrived and attempts to kill the monarch. William R. Pelham (December 24, 1845, or December 8, 1847 – March 30, 1933) was a Union Navy sailor during the American Civil War and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions at the Battle of Mobile Bay. Biography Pelham enlisted in the Navy from New York CityRecords are inconsistent on Pelham's place of enlistment. His Medal of Honor citation states that he enlisted in Nova Scotia. Richard Pelham
Richard Ward "Dick" Pelham (February 13, 1815 – October 1876), born Richard Ward Pell, was an American blackface performer. He was born in New York City. Pelham regularly did blackface acts in the early 1840s both solo and as part of a duo or trio. His early performances were in the mould of Thomas D. Rice; he did song-and-dance versions of "Gumbo Chaff" and " Oh Pshaw!", among others. His brother, Gilbert Pelham, paired with him for part of his early career. The song " Massa Is a Stingy Man" became their trademark tune. Pelham was also a renowned dancer; by 1845, he was ranked so highly that William Henry Lane did an impression of him. In 1843, Pelham became one of the founding members of the Virginia Minstrels, the first group to present a full minstrel show during a performance at the New York Bowery Amphitheatre on February 6, 1843. Peregrine Pelham
Sir Peregrine Pelham (died 1650) was an English Member of Parliament and one of the regicides of King Charles I. Pelham was a prosperous merchant in Kingston upon Hull before becoming town sheriff in 1636 and the MP for Kingston upon Hull in 1641. In 1642 along with Sir John Hotham, he barred the entry of King Charles into the City, and was present at the siege in the early part of the Civil War. Pelham and Hotham later fell out and, after Hotham was put on trial for allegedly betraying Hull to the Royalists, Pelham signed his death warrant. During the Second Civil War, Pelham again defended Hull. In January 1649, as a commissioner of the High Court of Justice at the trial of King Charles, he was 20th of the 59 signatories on the death warrant of the King. Moses Pelham
Moses Pelham (born 24 February 1971 in Frankfurt) is a German rapper, singer and producer. In 1993, together with Thomas Hofmann in Frankfurt, he started the Rödelheim Hartreim Projekt. Pelham is a member of the German band Glashaus. In 2019, in a lawsuit against the German band Kraftwerk, Pelham lost a groundbreaking in the European Court of Justice for unauthorised sampling. The ruling means that samples which are recognisable infringe copyright law where no permission has been sought from the rightsholder. However, there is no infringement if the sample is unrecognisable. The case was referred back to the German court who gave the final decision. The German court decided that the sample was recognisable, and therefore ultimately, Pelham lost his 20 year legal saga. John Pelham (September 7, 1838 – March 17, 1863) was a soldier who served with the Confederate cavalry under J.E.B. Stuart during the American Civil War. He was called "The Gallant Pelham" by Robert E. Lee for his use of light artillery at Fredericksburg to significantly delay Union soldiers during the Civil War. Early life Pelham was the third of seven children, with five brothers and a sister Betty, born to Dr. Atkinson and Martha Pelham ( née McGehee ) at his grandparents' home along Cane Creek near Alexandria, Alabama. He grew up on the family's plantation, and learned to raise horses at a young age.
