Pekin Celestials
The Pekin Celestials were an Illinois–Missouri League baseball team based in Pekin, Illinois, USA that played from 1909 to 1913. In their very first season, the Celestials had four different managers. Two future major league baseball players played for them that year as well: Cecil Coombs and Mike Prendergast. Coombs played for them in 1910 as well. In 1911 and 1912, future big leaguers Jim Bluejacket and Patsy McGaffigan played for the Celestials. 1913 is the only year in which no known future big league players played for the Celestials. The Illinois–Missouri League was an American minor league baseball league. The Class D (baseball), Class D league began operations in 1908, and continued through 1914 with teams located in Illinois and Missouri. The Lincoln Abes won consecutive league titles in 1912–1913. Cecil Coombs
Cecil Lysander Coombs (March 18, 1888 - November 25, 1975) was an American Major League Baseball outfielder who played for the Chicago White Sox in 1914. He went on to manage in the minor leagues following his playing career. Playing career Coombs began his professional career in 1907, playing for the Shelbyville Queen Citys of the Eastern Illinois League, where he returned the next season. In 1909, Coombs played for both the Pekin Celestials and Decatur Commodores. In 112 games that year, he hit .240. He played for the Celestials, Bloomington Bloomers and Danville Speakers in 1910, hitting .274 in 65 games. In 1911, he played for the Speakers, hitting .253 in 115 games. 1911 was the first year in his professional career in which he collected more than 100 hits. In 1912, Coombs split the season between the Speakers and Peoria Distillers, hitting only .220 in 96 games. Mike Prendergast (baseball)
Michael Thomas Prendergast (December 15, 1888 – November 18, 1967) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball. His nickname during his playing years was "Iron Mike". Mike was born in Arlington, Illinois to parents, Jeremiah Prendergast and Catherine Louise Corcoran, both natives of County Waterford, Ireland. In 1914 and 1915, he pitched for the Chicago Whales of the Federal League. When the Federal League ceased operations in 1915 and merged with the Chicago Cubs, Mike joined the Cubs organization. He pitched with the Cubs in 1916 and 1917. After the 1917 season, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies where he played in 1918 and 1919. Jim Bluejacket (born William Lincoln Smith July 8, 1887 – March 26, 1947) was a Major League Baseball, major league pitcher in the early 20th century. Bluejacket played for the Brooklyn Tip-Tops (–) and Cincinnati Reds ().
