Pedro Soares De Sousa
Pedro Soares de Sousa, also known as ''Pero Soares de Sousa'' exercised the role of the third Donatary-Captain for the island of Santa Maria, between 1571 and 1573 (he was preceded in his post by João de Marvão, as the lieutenant of João Soares de Sousa), as well as between 1576 and 1580 and succeeded by Jerónimo Coutinho. He should not be confused with his descendant and seventh Donatary-Captain of Santa Maria, who in a testament dated 12 February 1634, referred to his 1616 ascendancy to the stewardship of Santa Maria. Biography He was the son of João Soares de Sousa and Guiomar da Cunha (daughter of Francisco da Cunha de Albuquerque and Brites da Câmara, cousins of Afonso de Albuquerque). Raised at Corte, he was known as a man of character and charity, as was his father. He was a knight in the Order of Christ and commander of São Pedro do Sul. Pedro Filipe Gomes Soares (born 15 February 1979) is a Portuguese mathematician and politician of the Left Bloc. Born in Castelo de Paiva, Aveiro District, he graduated in Applied Mathematics from the University of Porto, and has a master's degree in remote sensing. In 2001, aged 22, he ran for a city council seat, and four years later he was second on his party's electoral list in the district for the legislative elections. In 2009, Soares became the first Left Bloc politician elected to the Assembly of the Republic by the Aveiro District, and was re-elected in 2011. On 6 December 2012, he was voted the party's parliamentary leader. Pedro dos Santos Soares (19151975) was a Portuguese communist activist who campaigned against the authoritarian '' Estado Novo'' government and was arrested on numerous occasions, spending about twelve years in political prisons. Early life Pedro dos Santos Soares was born on 13 January 1915 in the village of Trigaches, in the municipality of Beja, in the Beja District of Portugal. He attended high school in Beja. He began his political activism at the age of sixteen, participating in several student strikes and protests against the ''Estado Novo''. On moving to the Portuguese capital Lisbon in 1932 to complete his studies, he joined the Communist Youth Federation and began to contribute articles to the anti-government press.
