Pearl Necklace (1974–1991) was an American Thoroughbred racing mare bred and raced by Reginald N. Webster. She was sired by Ambernash, a son of U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Nashua, and her dam was Another Jane, a daughter of Traffic Judge, a top runner whose wins included the Woodward Stakes and the Metropolitan and Suburban Handicaps. Racing career Trained by Roger Laurin, Pearl Necklace raced for four years from 1976 through 1979. At age three she won the Long Island Handicap and Gazelle Handicap and at four the important Maskette Stakes and the New York Handicap but had her best year at age five when she captured the Flower Bowl, Geisha, Shuvee, Hempstead, and Diana Handicaps. Nashua (horse)
Nashua (April 14, 1952 – February 3, 1982) was an United States, American-born thoroughbred racehorse, best remembered for a 1955 match race against Swaps (horse), Swaps, the horse that had defeated him in the Kentucky Derby. Background Nashua's sire was the European champion Nasrullah (horse), Nasrullah. The dam was Segula, a broodmare who has had influence through her female descendants. Racing career Owned by William Woodward Jr., William Woodward, Jr.'s famous Belair Stud in Bowie, Maryland, Nashua was trained by Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons and ridden by jockey Eddie Arcaro. As a two-year-old in 1954, Nashua entered eight races, winning six and finishing second twice, which earned him champion 2-year-old honors. Diana Handicap
The Diana Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race. Named for the mythological goddess Diana, the race is run each year at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. Inaugurated in 1939, it is open to fillies and mares age three and up willing to race the one and one-eighth miles on the turf. The race is a Grade I with a current purse of $500,000. It became a Grade I race in 2003. From inception in 1939 to 1973, the race was run on Saratoga Race Course's dirt track. Because of large fields, it was split into two divisions in 1973, 1982, and 1983. The race was run at Belmont Park from 1943 to 1945 due to travel restrictions during World War II. Conquistador Cielo (March 20, 1979 – December 17, 2002) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. He is best known for his performances as a three-year-old in 1982 when he won the Belmont Stakes and was voted United States Horse of the Year. Background Conquistador Cielo was a bay horse sired by the outstanding breeding stallion Mr Prospector. His dam K D Princess was a successful racemare but not a top-class performer. She was descended from Whirl Right, a full-sister to Whirlaway. He was purchased as a yearling for $150,000 by Henryk de Kwiatkowski, and was trained by Woody Stephens. Lyphard (10 May 1969 – 10 June 2005) was an American-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and an important sire. Background American bred in Pennsylvania, Lyphard was a son of Northern Dancer out of the mare Goofed. He was auctioned as a weanling at November's Keeneland Sales to Tim Rogers, a horseman from Ireland, who then put him up for sale at Newmarket in England. There, renowned French trainer and breeder Alec Head purchased him on behalf of Madame Germaine Wertheimer, widow of the prominent French horseman and owner of the famous House of Chanel, Pierre Wertheimer. Germaine Wertheimer gave Lyphard his name in honor of the Ukrainian-born French ballet dancer and choreographer Serge Lifar. His Majesty (April 17, 1968 – September 21, 1995) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and top sire. Background His Majesty was bred by John W. Galbreath and raced under the colors of his Darby Dan Farm. Alydar
Alydar (March 23, 1975 – November 15, 1990) was an American Thoroughbred race horse and sire. A chestnut colt, he was most famous for finishing a close second to Affirmed in all three races of the 1978 Triple Crown. With each successive race, Alydar narrowed Affirmed's margin of victory; Affirmed won by 1.5 lengths in the Kentucky Derby, by a neck in the Preakness and by a head in the Belmont Stakes. Alydar has been described as the best horse in the history of Thoroughbred racing never to have won a championship. Alydar's fame continued when he got older. He died under suspicious circumstances. Suburban Handicap
The Suburban Stakes is an American Grade II Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Open to horses age three and older, it is now run at the mile distance on dirt for a $700,000 purse. Named after the City and Suburban Handicap in England, the Suburban had its 133rd running in 2019. Inaugurated at the Sheepshead Bay Race Track in 1884, it was run there through 1910. However, the 1908 passage of the Hart–Agnew anti-betting legislation by the New York Legislature under Republican Governor Charles Evans Hughes led to a state-wide shutdown of racing in 1911 and 1912. A February 21, 1913 ruling by the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division saw horse racing return in 1913. Metropolitan Handicap
The Metropolitan Handicap, frequently called the "Met Mile", is an American Grade I Thoroughbred horse race held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Open to horses age three and older, it is contested on dirt over a distance of one mile (8 furlongs). Starting in 2014, it is now run on the same day as the Belmont Stakes in early June. The Met Mile is one of the most prestigious American races outside of the Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup. Woodward Stakes
The Woodward Stakes is an American Grade I stakes race and is one of the premier races for older thoroughbred horses in the United States. It is named for prominent racehorse owner William Woodward. The race was first run in 1954 at Aqueduct Racetrack and then at Belmont Park in late September. In 2006, the Woodward was moved to Saratoga Race Course where it was run on the final Saturday of the meet until 2020. The race was moved back to Belmont Park in 2021. The Woodward was run as a handicap in 1954, 1955, and in 1976 and 1977. From 1957 through 1975 it was a weight-for-age event, and was run as an allowance stakes from 1977 through 1987. The race returned to being a handicap event in 1988, 1989, and 1990 then reverted to a weight-for-age race in 1991.
