Peace River (electoral District)
Peace River was a federal electoral district in Alberta, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1925 to 2015. It was a rural riding in northwest Alberta, representing Clear Hills County, Saddle Hills County, Birch Hills County, the County of Grande Prairie No. 1, the County of Northern Lights, Mackenzie County, most of Northern Sunrise County, the Municipal District of Fairview No. 136, the Municipal District of Peace No. 135, the Municipal District of Spirit River No. 133, the Municipal District of Smoky River No. 130 and the northern portion of the Municipal District of Greenview No. 16. Following the Canadian federal electoral redistribution, 2012 the riding abolished into Grande Prairie—Mackenzie (72%) and Peace River—Westlock (28%). Tanya Kappo
Tanya Kappo ( Cree) is an Indigenous rights activist. She is one of the four women who co-founded Idle No More and was briefly the manager of community relations for Canada's National Public Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Early life and education Kappo is from the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation in Treaty 8 Territory and was raised on the Northwestern Alberta Reserve in Sturgeon Lake. Her father was Harold Cardinal, author of ''The Red Paper''. She graduated the University of Manitoba with a J.D. in 2012. Activism and career Kappo is one of the four women who co-founded the Idle No More movement in November 2012. Kappo described the impetus for founding the movement as "the legislation facing First Nations, primarily Bill C-45". Chris Warkentin
Chris Warkentin (born November 20, 1978) is a businessman and Conservative politician from Alberta, Canada. Personal life Warkentin was born in Grande Prairie and raised on the family farm east of Grande Prairie, near the Hamlet of DeBolt in the MD of Greenview. He is an alumnus of the Peace River Bible Institute, and also studied business and marketing at Grande Prairie Regional College before going on to own and operate a custom home building company. He has served on the board of his local Conservative constituency association and was involved with the Reform Party of Canada and the Canadian Alliance. Edmonton West (french: Edmonton-Ouest) is a federal electoral district in Alberta, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1917 to 1988, from 1997 to 2004 and again since 2015. Demographics History and geography This riding was first created in 1914 from Edmonton riding. Originally this was vast rural district including most of the northwestern quadrant of the province of Alberta and a portion of the city of Edmonton, the area north of the river and west of 101st Street. In 1924, it took in parts of the now-abolished Strathcona riding that had been within Edmonton city limits. It took in the southside area lying west of 103rd Street. Peace River—Westlock is a federal electoral district in Alberta, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 2015. Peace River—Westlock was created by the 2012 federal electoral boundaries redistribution and was legally defined in the 2013 representation order. It came into effect upon the call of the 42nd Canadian federal election, scheduled for October 19, 2015. Grande Prairie—Mackenzie is a federal electoral district in northwestern Alberta, created in 2012 from the Peace River district. It contains the western half of Alberta's Peace region, including the city of Grande Prairie (where more than half its residents live) and stretching to the border with the Northwest Territories. It is impossible to traverse the district by road without leaving it, as the section of the Peace River contained within has no bridges or ferries. The riding was named Grande Prairie in the commission's initial report, but original plans for a much smaller riding were abandoned in the interest of keeping Peace River—Westlock more compact. The new name thus reflects the inclusion of Mackenzie County. The federal electoral redistribution of 2012 was a redistribution of electoral districts ("ridings") in Canada following the results of the 2011 Canadian census. As a result of amendments to the Constitution Act, 1867, the number of seats in the House of Commons of Canada increased from 308 to 338. The previous electoral redistribution was in 2003. Background and previous attempts at reform Prior to 2012, the redistribution rules for increasing the number of seats in the House of Commons of Canada was governed by section 51 of the ''Constitution Act, 1867'', as last amended in 1985. As early as 2007, attempts were made to reform the calculation of how that number was determined, as the 1985 formula did not fully take into account the rapid population growth being experienced in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.
