Peabody Magnet High School
Peabody Magnet High School is a public magnet high school located in the South Alexandria subdivision of Alexandria, Louisiana, United States, the seat of Rapides Parish and the largest city in central Louisiana. The school is named for one of its benefactors, George Foster Peabody (1852–1938), whose charitable foundation provided a grant to create the school. History Mr. J. B. Lafargue founded Peabody Industrial School in 1895, with the assistance of his wife, Mrs. S.C.B. Mayo Lafargue. Peabody was the only public school for Black students in Alexandria with grades 1 - 7 for many years. The school was named Peabody because of a grant that was given by George Peabody, a wealthy philanthropist and head of the George Peabody Foundation. Alexandria is the ninth-largest city in the state of Louisiana and is the parish seat of Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. Layon Gray (born January 26, 1969) is an American playwright and director known for works about the African-American experience. His best-known work is the off-Broadway play ''Black Angels Over Tuskegee'', about the Tuskegee airmen. Career A native of Louisiana, Gray writes, directs and develops stage plays and films. Israel Benjamin "Bo" Curtis (September 11, 1932 – February 16, 2012) was an American politician. He served as a Democratic member for the 26th district of the Louisiana House of Representatives. Life and career Curtis attended Peabody Magnet High School and went on to Grambling State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree. Curtis earned his master's degree at Northwestern State University. He then attended Texas Christian University and Texas Southern University, as well as Michigan State University.
