Gex, Ain
Gex (; frp, Gèx; it, Gesio) is a commune in the Ain department in eastern France and a subprefecture of the department. It lies from the Swiss border and from Geneva. It is a subprefecture of Ain. History The town gave its name to the ''Pays de Gex'', at various times under the jurisdiction of France, Switzerland and the Duchy of Savoy. The future site of Gex was inhabited around 1800 BC. Around 220 BC, a group of Gallic warriors known as the Gaesatae reside in the area around Gex. Afterwards, the town was part of Roman Gaul. In 1252, Léonette of Geneva, Lady of Gex, descendant of the count of Geneva, Amadeus I, married Simon of Joinville, son of Simon of Joinville and Beatrix of Auxonne, Lady of Marnay. The city of Gex was included in her dowry. Later that century, the Joinvilles set up a castellan and a judge in the town. Ferney-Voltaire
Ferney-Voltaire () is a commune in the Ain department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of eastern France. It lies between the Jura Mountains and the Swiss border; it forms part of the metropolitan area of Geneva. History Ferney was first noted in 14th-century Burgundian registers as "Fernex" and changed several times until the 19th century to Fernay, Fernaj, Fernai or Fernex before adopting its current name as 'Ferney-Voltaire' in 1791, after the French Revolution which saw a number of city names unchristened and then given more republican names. During Voltaire's residence in Ferney in the second part of the 18th century, the town saw rapid expansion. Today Ferney is a peaceful town with a Saturday market and a large international community, due to the proximity of CERN and the United Nations Office at Geneva. Ferney is growing very quickly. Sergy, Ain
Sergy (; frp, Sèrgi) is a commune in the Ain department in eastern France. History At the time of Roman occupation under Julius Caesar, a certain Sergius was rewarded with land - over time a small village developed around his home. Sergy was under Roman control for 464 years. In the Middle Ages, the Sergier family administered Sergy until 1533. This family also founded a chapel. In 1536, the Pays de Gex was invaded by the Bernese, and Protestantism was imposed by the de Martine family. The Sergier church became the Religionnaires temple. In 1589, the Genevese took possession of the area, and in 1600 it became part of Catholic France. The temple in Sergy remained a Protestant church. In 1685, the king forbade the reformed Protestant religion, and the temple was destroyed. In need of money, the de Martine family mortgaged Sergy, which was divided into "Sergy haut" (high Sergy) and "Sergy bas" (low Sergy). Ségny
Ségny (), also written Segny, is a commune in the Ain department in eastern France. Ségny is situated in the east of the department, in a district of the Lake Geneva / River Rhône basin known as the Pays de Gex. It lies on the important RN 5 trunk road from Paris to Geneva and is just five minutes by road from Geneva Cointrin International Airport. A local bus service connects Ségny to Geneva city centre, which is some away. Ségny became a member of the Pays de Gex Community of Communes on 1 January 1996. Saint-Genis-Pouilly (; frp, Sant-Genés-Polyi) is a commune in the Ain department within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of eastern France. It is located in the Pays de Gex, at the foot of the Jura Mountains. Bordering the Swiss frontier, it is part of the cross-border area of Geneva. With a population of almost 14,000 inhabitants (2019), it is the fifth most populous commune in the department of Ain. A large portion of CERN, the European laboratory for particle physics, is located within the territory of Saint-Genis-Pouilly; the ALICE experiment is located on the periphery of the town, and the main entrance to the primary CERN campus (Meyrin) and the ATLAS experiment are located only 3 km from the centre of St Genis. Prévessin-Moëns is a commune in the Ain department in eastern France, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The residents of Prévessin-Moëns are known as ''Prévessinois'' or ''Prévessinoises'' (feminine). Ornex
Ornex (; frp, Ornèx) is a commune in the Ain department in eastern France. Geography It is located on the former N5 highway between the Jura mountains and the Swiss border. Located nine kilometres from Geneva, many inhabitants commute across the Swiss border each morning to jobs with international organizations and multinational corporations. It is bordered in the south by Ferney-Voltaire, in the west by Prévessin-Moëns and Segny, in the north by Versonnex and in the east by the Swiss commune of Collex-Bossy. A section of the tunnel excavated by CERN between 1983 and 1988 passes under the town. Originally excavated for the LEP collider, the tunnel now houses the Large Hadron Collider that started operating in 2008. Mijoux
Mijoux is a commune and village in the Ain department in eastern France. Geography The village is situated in the upper section of the narrow Valserine valley, nestled between high limestone cliffs to the south-east that form the first anticline of the Jura mountains and the edge of the Lajoux plateau to the northwest. However, only the south-eastern side of the valley is within the commune's boundary, which stretches from the source of the Valserine river in the north, to the entry into Lélex, further down the valley, in the south. The commune is roughly 16 km long and 2 km wide. Despite its high altitude (just under 1000 m), the village is built around a crossroads of regional importance: the valley road (D991) which links Bellegarde-sur-Valserine with Les Rousses here crosses the D936 which links Saint-Claude with Geneva over the Col de la Faucille.
