Pax Christi International Peace Award
The Pax Christi International Peace Award is given out every year since 1988 by the Christian peace organisation Pax Christi to other peace organisations and peace activists. The focus lies on grassroots activists and organisations that are active in an ongoing conflict, working against violence and injustice. It is considered one of the most important peace awards awarded by international non-governmental organizations. The award is funded by the Cardinal Bernardus Alfrink Peace Fund and the board of the organisation Pax Christi International decides the winners. The annual award recipients usually get media attention in Catholic news outlets worldwide. Pax Christi International is an international Catholic peace movement. The Pax Christi International website declares its mission is "to transform a world shaken by violence, terrorism, deepening inequalities, and global insecurity." History ''Pax Christi'' (Latin for Peace of Christ) was established in France in 1945 through the inspiration of Marthe Dortel-Claudot and Bishop Pierre-Marie Théas. Both were French citizens interested in reconciliation between French and German citizens in the aftermath of World War II. Some of the first actions of Pax Christi were the organisation of kindness pilgrimages and other actions fostering reconciliation between France and Germany. Although Pax Christi initially began as a movement for French-German reconciliation, it expanded its focus and spread to other European countries in the 1950s. Franjo Komarica (born 3 February 1946) is a Bosnian prelate of the Catholic Church, the Bishop emeritus of Banja Luka and president of the Bishops' Conference of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Early life One of eleven children, Komarica was born in Novakovići near Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, to Ivka () and Ivo Komarica. He finished elementary school in Banja Luka, then he attended the minor seminary in Zagreb (1961–63) and Đakovo (1963–65). Jubilee 2000 was an international coalition movement in over 40 countries that called for cancellation of third world debt by the year 2000. Laurien Ntezimana (born 1955) is a Rwandan Catholic theologian, sociologist and peace activist known for protecting Tutsi during the Rwandan genocide of 1994. Personal life Ntezimana was born in 1955 in Butare prefecture, where he lived at the time of the genocide. By 2011, Ntezimana was living in Belgium. Opposition to the genocide During the genocide Ntezimana was known to protect Tutsi. Despite his reputation, he was elected by the community of Ngoma sector in Ngoma commune (just outside Butare town) to the local "security committee" set up in May. Maria de Lourdes Martins Cruz is an East Timorese Roman Catholic woman dedicated to the service of the poor. Biography She was born in Liquica, East Timor in 1962. After an education interrupted by the independence struggle, she joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity as a novice. In 1985 she went to Indonesia to study Theology at a Jesuit institute in Yogjakarta. In 1989 she returned home to start a lay order the Brothers and Sisters in Christ. She built a training institute for girls and women in Dare. She has dedicated her life to "changing the plight of the poor by working on the roots of the problems".
