Pavel Chirău
Colonel Pavel Chirău (27 September 19528 November 2008) was a Moldovan military officer who served as the first Chief of the General Staff of the Army of the Republic of Moldova. Biography Chirău was born on 27 September 1952, in the village of Novoselivka in the Odessa Oblast of what is now Ukraine. He joined the Soviet Army in the early 1970s, rising through the ranks to become an officer. After the establishment of the Moldovan National Army in 1992, he was one of the former Soviet officers who formed the basis of the military leadership in the National Army, fulfilling key functions in the General Staff. The Chief of the General Staff of the Moldovan National Army (''Marelui Stat Major al Armatei Republicii Moldova'') also known as the Commander of National Army is the professional head of the Moldovan National Army and the larger Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova. The position was established on 26 April 1994, two days after the general staff of the national army was established. The Moldovan National Army ( ro, Armata Națională a Republicii Moldova) is the senior branch of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova composed of the Air Force and the Land Forces. Mircea Snegur (; born 17 January 1940) is a Moldovan politician who was served as first President of Moldova from 1990–1997. Before that, he served as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet 1989–1990 (head of state) and Chairman of the Supreme Soviet from 27 April to 3 September 1990. Early life and education Snegur was born in Trifănești, in Soroca District to Ivan and Anna Snegur.
