Borough (New Jersey)
A borough (also spelled boro), in the context of local government in the U.S. state of New Jersey, refers to one of five ''types'' and one of eleven ''forms'' of municipal government (in addition to those established under a Special Charter). Though it is now the most common form of local government in New Jersey, by 1875 only 17 boroughs had been created, all by special acts of the legislature. These original boroughs were ''subdivisions'' of townships, established by state charter; Elizabeth was the first, established by royal charter in 1740, within the now defunct Elizabeth Township. About half of them had been dissolved, or changed into other forms of government—often cities. Fort Billingsport
Fort Billingsport (Fort Billings in some sources), at Billingsport in Paulsboro, Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States, was an American Revolutionary War fort on the Delaware River. The site of the fort is now a public park of the same name, located at the Plains Terminal at the Port of Paulsboro between two oil refineries. Background The land for the fort was purchased by the Pennsylvania Committee of Safety as authorized by the Continental Congress on July 5, 1776, the first land purchase made by the United States. The site was purchased for 600 pounds. The fort was built to protect a line of ''chevaux de frise'' obstacles that were placed in the river in 1775. Tadeusz Kościuszko designed the fortifications at the request of George Washington. Construction began under the supervision of Robert Smith, designer of the river obstacles, who died in February 1777 while working on the fort. Greenwich Township is a township in Gloucester County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2010 U.S. census, the township's population was 4,899, reflecting an increase of 20 (+0.4%) from the 4,879 counted in the 2000 census. Greenwich Township was first formed on March 1, 1695, and was formally incorporated as one of New Jersey's initial group of 104 townships by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798. The United States census of 2010 was the twenty-third United States national census. National Census Day, the reference day used for the census, was April 1, 2010. The census was taken via mail-in citizen self-reporting, with enumerators serving to spot-check randomly selected neighborhoods and communities.
