Pauloff Harbor Village
Pauloff Harbor Village is a federally recognized Aleut Alaska Native tribal entity. About Pauloff Harbor Village is headquartered at Sand Point on Popof Island in the Shumagin Islands of the Aleutians East Borough. It is one of three federally recognized Aleut tribes in Sand Point. The tribe is named after Pauloff Harbor off the coast of Sanak Island. Sanak Island is now unpopulated and the former community of Pauloff Harbor is a ghost town. Sanak Island had been populated by Aleut people until 1828 when Russian colonial administrators displaced the population. As of 2005, the tribe had 51 enrolled citizens. Aleuts
The Aleuts ( ; russian: Алеуты, Aleuty) are the indigenous people of the Aleutian Islands, which are located between the North Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea. Both the Aleut people and the islands are politically divided between the US state of Alaska and the Russian administrative division of Kamchatka Krai. Etymology In the Aleut language they are known by the endonyms Unangan (eastern dialect) and Unangas (western dialect), both of which mean "people". The Russian term "Aleut" was a general term used for both the native population of the Aleutian Islands and their neighbors to the east in the Kodiak Archipelago, who were also referred to as "Pacific Eskimos". Sand Point, Alaska
Sand Point, also known as Popof Island, is a city in Aleutians East Borough, Alaska, United States. At the 2010 census the population was 976, up from 952 in 2000, but by the 2020 Census this had reduced to 578. It is on northwestern Popof Island, one of the Shumagin Islands, off the Alaska Peninsula. It is the borough seat of Aleutians East Borough, and is near the entrance to the Bering Sea. Alaska Natives
Alaska Natives (also known as Alaskan Natives, Native Alaskans, Indigenous Alaskans, Aboriginal Alaskans or First Alaskans) are the indigenous peoples of Alaska and include Iñupiat, Yupik, Aleut, Eyak, Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, and a number of Northern Athabaskan cultures. They are often defined by their language groups. Popof Island (Siitikdax̂ in Aleut language, Aleut) is an island in the Shumagin Islands south of mainland Alaska. The Shumagin Islands (Unangan: ''Qagiiĝun''; russian: Острова Шумагина) are a group of 20 islands in the Aleutians East Borough south of the mainland of Alaska, United States, at 54°54'–55°20' North 159°15'–160°45' West. Aleutians East Borough, Alaska
Aleutians East Borough () is a 2nd class borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. As of the 2020 census the borough's population was 3,420. The borough seat is Sand Point. History According to archaeological evidence, the area has been inhabited by the Aleuts since the last ice age. Early contact was with Russian fur traders who sought sea otters in these islands. Sanak Island ( ale, Sanaĝax) is an island in the Fox Islands group of the Aleutian Islands in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is located at . Pauloff Harbor, Alaska
Pauloff Harbor is an unincorporated community with no year-round population on the west side of Pavlov Harbor on the northern coast of Sanak Island, southeast of False Pass, in the Aleutians East Borough of the U.S. state of Alaska. The primary means of transportation is boats and float planes from False Pass or King Cove. While a post office was established in 1949, the village has no permanent population at present or public facilities, although a village corporation operates from a post office box in Sand Point, where most of the corporation shareholders live. Russian Colonization Of North America
The Russian colonization of North America covers the period from 1732 to 1867, when the Russian Empire laid claim to northern Pacific Coast territories in the Americas. Russian colonial possessions in the Americas are collectively known as Russian America. Russian expansion eastward began in 1552, and in 1639 Russian explorers reached the Pacific Ocean. In 1725, Emperor Peter the Great ordered navigator Vitus Bering to explore the North Pacific for potential colonization.
