Pauline De Bassano
Pauline Marie Ghislaine de Bassano, née ''van der Linden d'Hooghvorst'' (23 September 1814 in Meise – 9 December 1867), was a French courtier. She served as ''dame d'honneur'' to Empress Eugénie de Montijo in 1853–1867. Life She was born to the Belgian politician . In 1843, she married the French diplomat , 3rd Duc de Bassano. The French titles of Comte Maret and Duc de Bassano were created by Emperor Napoleon I, in 1807 and 1809 respectively, for Hugues-Bernard Maret, a French diplomat and statesman. The Dame du Palais, originally only Dame, was an historical office in the Royal Court of France. It was a title of a lady-in-waiting holding the official position of personal attendant on a female member of the French Royal Family. The position was traditionally held by a female member of a noble family. They were ranked between the ''Première dame d'honneur'' and the ''Fille d'honneur''. Christine-Zoë de Tuillière-Montjoye, Marquise de Dolomieu (1779–1849) was a French courtier. She was the ''Première dame d'honneur'' of the French queen Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily. She was the daughter of comte Gustave de Montjoye; she married Alphonse de Gratet, marquis de Dolomieu. Her father was a personal friend of Louis Philippe I, and had followed him into exile during the French Revolution. She was appointed ''dame pour accompagner'' (lady-in-waiting) of Maria Amalia, the duchess of Orléans. When Maria Amalia became queen in 1830, Montjoye served as the senior lady-in-waiting of the queen. Franz Xaver Winterhalter (20 April 1805 – 8 July 1873) was a German painter and lithographer, known for his flattering portraits of royalty and upper-class society in the mid-19th century. ''Empress Eugénie Surrounded by her Ladies in Waiting'' is an oil on canvas painting by the German artist Franz Xaver Winterhalter completed in 1855. It features depictions of the empress of France, Eugénie de Montijo, and eight of her ladies-in-waiting. The painting was displayed at the Palace of Fontainebleau during the regime of Eugénie's husband, Napoleon III. After Eugénie's exile to England, the painting was given to her, and later displayed in the entrance to her house at Farnborough Hill. It is currently on display at Château de Compiègne. History The painting was commissioned by Empress Eugénie de Montijo to be exhibited at the painting salon of the Exposition Universelle, which opened in May.
