Pauline Bush (actress)
Pauline Elvira Bush (May 22, 1886 – November 1, 1969) was an American silent film actress. She was nicknamed "The Madonna of the Movies". Early years Born in Wahoo, Nebraska, Bush was "brought up for the operatic stage and concert platform, utshe preferred the stage." She studied at the University of Nebraska after attending a private school in Virginia. At Nebraska, she studied "music generally, and the piano in particular." After she moved to Los Angeles, Bush studied expression and literature at the Cumnock Institution. Career Early in her career, Bush was active in stock theater at the Liberty Theater in Oakland, California. Her film career began with the American Film Manufacturing Company. From 1910 to 1924, she appeared in some 250 movies, dozens of them featuring Lon Chaney. She retired in 1916. Personal life Bush married director Allan Dwan in 1915. They divorced in 1919. It is part one of a four-film series directed by Giblyn called '' The Adventures of François Villon''. ''The Oubliette'' was written by Harry G. Stafford, based on a short story of the same name by George Bronson Howard published in ''The Century Magazine''. Of the four films in the series, Chaney appears only briefly in ''The Oubliette'' and reappeared as a completely different character in the second installment of the serial, ''The Higher Law'' which is not known to survive in any archive. ''Richelieu'' is a 1914 American silent film, silent historical drama film written and directed by Allan Dwan, based on the play Richelieu (play), ''Richelieu'' written by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. This was Allan Dwan's last film for Universal, as he moved to New York afterward to work at the Famous Players Company and married his lead actress Pauline Bush in 1915. ''Virtue Is Its Own Reward'' (aka ''Virtue Its Own Reward'') is a 1914 American silent drama film directed by Joe De Grasse and featuring Lon Chaney and Pauline Bush. It was written by Harry G. Stafford from a story by John Barton Oxford. The film is basically considered to be a lost film, although in 2018, a 25-foot fragment of the film was found in a Brooklyn attic stuck inside a Keystone Moviegraph projector and the footage was donated to the George Eastman House. The footage only runs about 17 seconds and includes two very brief shots of Lon Chaney in it. Actor Tom Forman (who played Seadley Swaine in the film) later directed Lon Chaney in ''Shadows'' (1922).
