Paulette McDonagh
Paulette de Vere McDonagh (11 June 1901 – 30 August 1978), was an Australian film director, who often worked in collaboration with her sisters Phyllis and Isabella. In 1933 it was claimed she was one of only five female film directors in the world. At one stage they had offers to go to Hollywood. "Fox Films offered to send us," said Phyllis McDonagh, "But we were sensible girls. We sat down and talked and decided we would end up very small fish in a big pond. At home we had work and a reputation." Life and career Paulette McDangh was born on 11 June 1901 in Sydney and one of seven children born to Annie Jane (Anita) Amora and John Michael McDonagh. She was educated at the Catholic Kincoppal School in Elizabeth Bay, Sydney. She collaborated alongside her sisters Isabel and Phyllis to create and produce films. ''Two Minutes Silence'' is a 1933 Australian melodrama set during World War I based on Les Haylen's anti-war play. It was the fourth and last feature film by the Sydney-based McDonagh sisters, Paulette, Isobel and Phyllis, who called it "by far the best picture we produced". It is considered Australia's first anti-war movie and is a lost film. Synopsis On Armistice Day, some years after World War I has ended, four people gather in General Gresham's London drawing room. The ''Australian Dictionary of Biography'' (ADB or AuDB) is a national co-operative enterprise founded and maintained by the Australian National University (ANU) to produce authoritative biographical articles on eminent people in Australia's history. Initially published in a series of twelve hard-copy volumes between 1966 and 2005, the dictionary has been published online since 2006 by the National Centre of Biography at ANU, which has also published ''Obituaries Australia'' (OA) since 2010. Phyllis Glory McDonagh (7 January 1900 – 17 October 1978) was an Australian film producer, production designer and journalist, who often worked in collaboration with her sisters Paulette and Isabella. Early life McDongah was born on Macquaire Street in Sydney, Australia, on 7 January 1900 and was the second child of seven born to John Michael McDonagh, and Annie Jane (Anita) McDonagh (née Amora). She attended school at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Elizabeth Bay, as a boarder alongside her two sisters Isabella and Paulette. Career Film Phyllis McDonagh began her career in film alongside her two sisters Isabella and Paulette with the film '' Those Who Love'' in 1926. Phyllis worked as the production manager, and collaborated closely with her younger sister Paulette who would direct and write their majority of their films.
