Paula D'Hondt
Paula Rosa D'Hondt-Van Opdenbosch, (27 August 1926 – 23 November 2022) was a Belgian Christian-Democratic politician who served as a minister and was given an award for her freedom of thought. Life and career D’Hondt was born in Kerksken, Haaltert on 27 August 1926. From 1948 she worked as a social worker before she went into politics in the 1970s. She was senator from 1974 to 1991. She rose to be a minister in Belgium. From 1981 to 1988 she was Secretary of State for post and telecommunication, and in 1988 and 1989 she was the last minister of public works before the task was distributed to the regions. Between 1989 and 1993, D'Hondt was appointed to lead a commission into the subject of immigration. She was given a number of awards including the Ark Prize of the Free Word in 2003 which is awarded for free thought. She had emphasised that immigrants had duties to the state as well as rights. Haaltert () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders in the Denderstreek. The municipality comprises the towns of Denderhoutem, Haaltert proper, and . In 2021, Haaltert had a total population of 18,892. The total area is 30.30 km². The current mayor of Haaltert is Veerle Baeyens, from the N-VA. Ark Prize Of The Free Word
The Arkprijs van het Vrije Woord (Ark Prize of the Free Word) is a symbolic award created in 1951 by Herman Teirlinck and the editorial team of the ''Nieuw Vlaams Tijdschrift'' (New Flemish magazine) to counteract ideologically driven restrictions on the freedom of expression. Teirlinck wanted to spotlight those persons who actively promote the freedom of opinion. No financial reward is associated with the prize. The Minister of State ( nl, Minister van Staat, french: Ministre d'État, german: Staatsminister) is an honorary title in Belgium. It is formally granted by the Belgian monarch, but on the initiative of the Belgian federal government. It is given on a personal basis, for life rather than for a specified period. The title is granted for exceptional merits, generally to senior politicians at the end of their party careers. It is not lost after a criminal conviction (Guy Spitaels, Willy Claes).
