Paul Young (born October 7, 1979) is an American politician who has served as the Mayor of Memphis, Tennessee since January 2024. He is the 5th African-American to serve as mayor of Memphis. Early life and education Paul Young was born on October 7, 1979, in Memphis, Tennessee. After graduating from East High School, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee, followed by a Master of Science in urban and regional planning and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Memphis. Career From 2003 to 2006, Young served as a planner for the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development. From 2006 to 2010, he worked as a financial analyst for Community Capital Memphis. Young held several positions in Shelby County government before serving as director of the Memphis Division of Housing and Community Development. 2023 Memphis Mayoral Election
The 2023 Memphis mayoral election took place on October 5, 2023. Incumbent Jim Strickland is term-limited and could not seek re-election to a third term in office. The election used the plurality vote system, with no possibility of a runoff. The election was officially non-partisan, but several candidates were affiliated with political parties. Municipal government official Paul Young won the election, with all other major candidates conceding on the night of the election. Young prevailed with a low plurality of the vote against numerous other candidates, including Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner, former mayor Willie Herenton, and former Shelby County commission chair Van Turner. James Steven Strickland Jr. (born October 22, 1963) is an American attorney and politician who is the 64th and current mayor of Memphis, Tennessee, Memphis, Tennessee, serving since 2016. A Democratic Party (United States), Democrat, he previously served as a member of the Memphis City Council. Strickland is also an adjunct professor at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Early life, education, and early career Strickland was born in Mishawaka, Indiana before moving to Memphis, Tennessee. There, he graduated from Christian Brothers High School (Memphis, Tennessee), Christian Brothers High School in 1982 and received a bachelor's degree and Juris Doctor from the University of Memphis in 1989.
