Paul Turner (director)
Paul Turner (December 1945 – 1 November 2019) was a Welsh film director. His film ''Hedd Wyn (film), Hedd Wyn'' (1992) became the first Welsh film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Born in Devon, Turner learned Welsh while working at the BBC in the early 1980s and was a vocal supporter of Plaid Cymru. He was reportedly "blacklisted" from the BBC for his nationalist views (reported in an article in ''The Observer''). S4C director called him "a man with vision and a fire in his heart for all things Welsh and the Welsh language and his desire to portray that on film". Paul had two daughters during his first marriage to Sheila Ford, He had 3 grandchildren. His second marriage was to Welsh actress Sue Roderick. He died in November 2019 at the age of 73. ''Hedd Wyn'' is a 1992 Welsh anti-war biopic, written by Alan Llwyd and directed by Paul Turner. Based on the life of Ellis Humphrey Evans (Huw Garmon), killed in the First World War, the cinematography starkly contrasts the lyrical beauty of the poet's native Meirionnydd with the bombed-out horrors of Passchendaele. The protagonist is depicted as a tragic hero with an intense dislike of the pro-war jingoism which surrounds him. The film's title is Ellis Evans' bardic name (, "blessed peace"), under which he was posthumously awarded the Chair at the 1917 National Eisteddfod of Wales. ''Hedd Wyn'' won the Royal Television Society's Award for Best Single Drama and BAFTA Cymru Awards in several categories; and was the first Welsh language film nominated for an Academy Award. ''The Life and Times of David Lloyd George'' is a BBC Wales drama serial first broadcast in 1981 on BBC Two. It stars Philip Madoc as David Lloyd George, the final Liberal prime minister of the UK. The cast also includes Lisabeth Miles, Kika Markham and David Markham. It was written by Elaine Morgan and produced and directed by John Hefin. The serial is in nine hour-long parts, covering most of the major events of Lloyd George's life, from his birth in Manchester in January 1863 until his death in 1945 in Llanystumdwy.
