Paul Sykes (boxer)
Paul Sykes (23 May 1946 – 7 March 2007) was a British heavyweight boxer, weightlifter, writer, prisoner, and debt collector. He spent much of his adult life in prison, where he became one of the UK's most notorious inmates. As a boxer he had success as an amateur in 1973, and in a brief professional career in 1979 fought John L. Gardner for the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles. Early life Sykes was born 23 May 1946 in Wakefield, West Yorkshire to Walter Sykes and Betty Barlow. He grew up on the Lupset council estate and took up boxing at the age of 7 at the Robin Hood and Thorpe Amateur Boxing Club. Sykes displayed considerable talent at an early age which, with his size and ability to move, made him formidable. However, he also began drinking heavily at a young age. Paul Sykes (born 30 May 1943) is an English businessman and political donor. He opposed Britain's membership of the European Union and has donated to the UK Independence Party. He had previously supported the Conservative Party, but disagreed with its support of the Maastricht Treaty. Business Born in Barnsley, Sykes was the son of coal miner Edmund Sykes. He failed his eleven-plus in 1954 and went to Raley Secondary Modern, leaving school four years later with no qualifications. He had various manual jobs, working largely as a tyre fitter before setting up a business at the age of 18 to dismantle old buses and sell their engines to the Far East for use in fishing boats. He later dealt in buses, coaches and trucks across northern England. Sykes developed industrial, office and warehouse properties first in London Docklands and later Wakefield, Salford, Leeds and Rotherham. Paul Sykes (born 11 August 1981) is an English professional rugby league footballer who plays as a for the Dewsbury Rams in the Betfred Championship. He was also the interim head-coach following the departure of Lee Greenwood. Sykes has played as a left- footed goal-kicking and during his career. He has previously also played for Featherstone Rovers ( captain), the Bradford Bulls, the London Broncos/Harlequins RL and the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats . Paul Sykes (1937–1994), was an American folksinger, best known for live performances in the early 1960s at The Ice House, a folk music club in Pasadena, California, and as a member of folk trio The Randy Sparks Three.
