Paul Stevens (baseball)
Paul Stevens (born November 26, 1953) is an American college baseball coach who has been as an assistant coach for the University of Chicago Maroons baseball team since 2016. Before coming to Chicago, he was the head coach of the Northwestern Wildcats baseball program for 28 seasons, from 1988 through 2015. He is the winningest coach in Northwestern's program history, with over 600 wins. At Northwestern, Stevens has had 67 players drafted by Major League Baseball teams or signed to professional contracts. Stevens coached 94 All-Big Ten players, including four-time World Series champion Joe Girardi, two-time Major League Baseball All-Star Mark Loretta, and Toronto Blue Jays' J.A. Happ. Stevens announced his retirement partway through the 2015 season and stepped down at the end of the year. Stevens played for two seasons at South Alabama before transferring to Lewis. Chicago Maroons Baseball
The Chicago Maroons are the intercollegiate sports teams of the University of Chicago. They are named after the color Maroon (color), maroon. Team colors are maroon and gray, and the Phoenix (mythology), Phoenix is their mascot. They now compete in the NCAA Division III, mostly as members of the University Athletic Association. The University of Chicago helped found the Big Ten Conference in 1895, although it dropped football in 1939 (as inconsistent with its academic vision), its other teams remained members until 1946. Football returned as a club sport in 1963, as a varsity sport in 1969, and began competing independently in Division III in 1973. Mark David Loretta (born August 14, 1971) is an American former professional baseball infielder. He played 15 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) between 1995 and 2009 for the Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Loretta coached the Israeli national baseball team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic qualifier in September 2012. Playing career Amateur Loretta attended Northwestern University.
