Paul Smith (defensive End)
Paul Edward Smith (August 13, 1945 – March 14, 2000) was an American professional football player who was a defensive end in the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL), primarily with the Denver Broncos. He played college football for the New Mexico Lobos. Early life Smith was born in Ada, Oklahoma but raised in Roswell, New Mexico. He played college football for the New Mexico Lobos. Pro football career Smith was selected in the 1968 NFL/AFL draft by the Denver Broncos of the Denver Broncos. and later played in the NFL for the Broncos and Washington Redskins. Smith played as a defensive tackle for his first season in 1968. He played in 12 games with three starts. He made his first recorded statistic in 1970 when he recovered a fumble once (unofficially, he recorded his first quarterback sacks that year, recording three in the year). Defensive end (DE) is a defensive position in the sport of gridiron football. This position has designated the players at each end of the defensive line, but changes in formation (American football), formations over the years have substantially changed how the position is played. Charley Lane Johnson (born November 22, 1938) is a former American football quarterback and retired professor of chemical engineering. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for 15 years with three teams: the St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Oilers, and Denver Broncos. College career A native of Big Spring, Texas, Johnson initially was set to play football with a scholarship at Schreiner Institute, but the school dropped football the season he arrived. In American football, the 3–4 defense is a common defensive alignment consisting of three down linemen and four linebackers. It is a called a "base defense" because it is the default defensive alignment used on "base downs" (1st and 2nd downs). However, defenses will readily switch to other defensive alignments (such as a nickel defense or a dime defense) as circumstances change. Alternatively, some defenses use a 4–3 defense. Joel Dale Collier (born June 7, 1932) is an American former football coach who was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills of the American Football League (AFL) from 1966 through part of 1968, compiling a 13–16–1 record. College career Collier attended Northwestern University, where he played on the Northwestern Wildcats football team. In 1952, his junior season, he broke Big Ten Conference records by catching seven touchdown passes and accumulating 650 receiving yards. He was named to the 1952 College Football All-America Team. 1977 Denver Broncos Season
The 1977 Denver Broncos season (also known as the Broncomania season) was the team's 18th year in professional football and its eighth with the National Football League (NFL). The team had what was then by far its best season at 12–2, finishing first in the AFC West, and making the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
