Paul Sharkey
Paul Sharkey (born 8 June 1974) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1990s. Sharkey was only 16 when he came to Collingwood from Bendigo, after being secured with the 22nd pick of the 1990 AFL draft. He didn't make his league debut until 1994 and made ten appearances in total for the season, including a qualifying final against West Coast. A tall defender, he played just once in 1995 but added another ten games in 1996. He was traded to Hawthorn Football Club prior to the 1998 season, in exchange for Shannon Gibson. Sharkey however wouldn't play another AFL game and saw out the decade at the Bendigo Bombers. Sandhurst Football Club
The Sandhurst Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Dragons'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in Bendigo, Victoria (Australia), Victoria. Sandhurst is the former name of that city. The club teams currently compete in the Bendigo Football League, Bendigo Football Netball League. The football team is the second most-winning team of the BFL, with 27 premierships. History Sandhurst, who were then known as the Maroons, were one of the league's foundation clubs in 1880. 1990 AFL Draft
The 1990 AFL draft was the 5th annual draft of Australian rules footballers to the 14 clubs in the Australian Football League. It consisted of the national draft held at the end of the 1990 season, the pre-season draft held before the 1991 AFL season, and a mid-season draft. Clubs receive picks based on the reverse of the position in which they finish on the ladder during the season. This was introduced as an equalisation strategy in response to the increasing transfer fees and player salaries. National draft rules The minimum draft age for the 1990 national draft was 16. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). Bendigo ( ) is a city in Victoria, Australia, located in the Bendigo Valley near the geographical centre of the state and approximately north-west of Melbourne, the state capital. The West Coast Eagles are a professional Australian rules football club based in Perth, Western Australia. The club was founded in 1986 as one of two expansion teams in the Australian Football League (AFL), then known as the Victorian Football League. Shannon Gibson
Shannon Gibson (born 7 November 1975) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Hawthorn and Collingwood in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1990s. Gibson was recruited by Hawthorn with the 23rd pick of the 1993 AFL draft, after earning 'Best on Ground' honours for the Northern Knights in their TAC Cup final win over the Western Jets. He kicked two goals and two behinds on his AFL debut, a win over the previous year's Grand Finalists Geelong at Kardinia Park. In his three seasons at Hawthorn, Gibson was unable to cement a place in the team but did kick four goals against Geelong in 1997 and three goals in a win over Melbourne a week later. He was traded to Collingwood at the end of the 1997 season, for Paul Sharkey, who did not end up playing a game for Hawthorn. The Bendigo Gold Football Club was an Australian rules football club based in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. The club played in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1998 until 2014, under the nicknames Diggers, Bombers and Gold at different times.
