Paul O'Byrne
Paul O'Byrne, M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O., FRCPI, FRCPC, FRCP(Edin), FRCP(Glas) is an Irish-Canadian respirologist, the Dean and Vice President-elect of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Dean of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University. He was the E.J. Moran Chair of Respiratory Medicine at McMaster University Medical School from 1998 to 2016. Early life and education O'Byrne was born in Ireland and grew up in South Africa. He was a childhood asthmatic and that inspired him to pursue asthma research. He went to medical school at University College Dublin and completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in respiratory medicine at McMaster University. He completed further research fellowship training at McMaster University and at the Cardiovascular Research Institute in San Francisco. McMaster University (McMaster or Mac) is a public research university in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The main McMaster campus is on of land near the residential neighbourhoods of Ainslie Wood and Westdale, adjacent to the Royal Botanical Gardens. The Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, known as the McMaster University School of Medicine prior to 2004, is the medical school of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It is operated by the McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences. It is one of two medical programs in Canada, along with the University of Calgary, that operates on an accelerated 3-year MD program, instead of the traditional 4-year MD program. The Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health (FIRH) is a center for the investigation and treatment of respiratory diseases. Based out of St. Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, the institute is a clinical facility with strong research directions.
