Paul Nietsche
Paul Nietsche (17 June 1885 – 4 October 1950) was a Ukrainian artist and teacher who emigrated to Ulster in 1936 where he became a central figure on the Belfast artistic and literary scenes between the 1930s and his death in 1950. Early life Paul Felix Franz Nietsche was born to German parents in Kiev in the Ukraine on 17 June 1885. At the age of six his family moved to Odessa where his father established a lithographic printing firm. His artistic talents were encouraged by his Mother from a young age. Nietsche's Mother was said to have pawned his brother's coat on one occasion to buy paints for him. Nietsche studied art at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Odessa under Gennadiy Ladyzhensky and Kiriak Kostandi. In 1908 he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. Nietsche then moved to Paris where he befriended the sculptor Auguste Rodin and showed at the Salon of 1912. Gennady Aleksandrovich Ladyzhensky (russian: Генна́дий Алекса́ндрович Лады́женский; 23 January 1852, Kologriv - 2 September 1916, Kologriv) was a Russian landscape painter and Academician at the Imperial Academy of Arts. Joseph Tomelty
Joseph Tomelty (5 March 1911 – 7 June 1995) was an Irish actor, playwright, novelist, short-story writer and theatre manager. He worked in film, television, radio and on the stage. starring in Sam Thompson's 1960 play ''Over the Bridge''. Life and career Born in Portaferry (Ireland at the time, now Northern Ireland) in 1911, he was the son of James Tomelty; a skilled fiddler who was nicknamed "Rollicking". The National Self-Portrait Collection Of Ireland
The National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland is a collection of more than 400 self-portraits of Irish artists which is housed in the Kneafsey Gallery at the University of Limerick. The origins of the collection can be found in the purchase of fifteen self-portraits from the collection of the late John Kneafsey by the university in 1977. Kneafsey worked as office manager for the '' Irish Independent'' newspaper and was a former Chair of the Limerick Art Society, a patron and collector of art. In 1982 the university appointed a Board of Trustees tasked with establishing and maintaining a national collection which would reflect a broad spectrum of the visual arts across the island. In addition to creating a national reference collection, the process aims to formally recognise the contributions made by Irish artists in their own lifetime. Ulster Museum
The Ulster Museum, located in the Botanic Gardens in Belfast, has around 8,000 square metres (90,000 sq. ft.) of public display space, featuring material from the collections of fine art and applied art, archaeology, ethnography, treasures from the Spanish Armada, local history, numismatics, industrial archaeology, botany, zoology and geology.
