Paul Nelson (critic)
Paul Nelson (January 21, 1936 — circa July 5, 2006) was an A&R executive, magazine editor, and music critic best known for writing for ''Sing Out!'', ''The Village Voice'' and ''Rolling Stone''. Born in Warren, Minnesota, Nelson attended St. Olaf College before graduating from University of Minnesota, where he became acquainted with Bob Dylan and co-founded a seminal folk revival magazine, ''The Little Sandy Review''. As a critic, he defended Dylan when he "went electric" at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 and was instrumental in supporting the careers of Dylan, Clint Eastwood, Leonard Cohen, Elliott Murphy, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Neil Young, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols and Warren Zevon. While employed by the A&R department of Mercury Records from 1970 to 1975, Nelson briefly served as David Bowie's publicist and championed such disparate artists as Rod Stewart, Doug Sahm, New York Dolls, Blue Ash, and Reddy Teddy. Paul Nelson ''(né'' Paul Eugene Nelson; 26 January 1929 Phoenix, Arizona – 11 April 2008 Providence, Rhode Island) was an American musician and composer. His compositions—in all genres except opera—have been performed on four continents. Growing up Paul Nelson was born in Phoenix, Arizona on January 26, 1929. He attended public elementary school there, and graduated in 1947 as salutatorian from Phoenix Union High School. Career After high school, Nelson studied music, first at Phoenix College, then at Arizona State University in Tempe in the late 1940s. By 1948, he had composed and arranged works for dance bands, including the Earle Spencer Orchestra, the Los Angeles City College Band. Nelson served three years, from October 5, 1950, to October 4, 1953, in the U.S. Army, which included an assignment from October 1950 to June 1951 playing in an Army band and teaching the Band Training Unit at Fort Ord, California. Paul A. Nelson (born 1958) is an American philosopher, noted for his advocacy of the pseudosciences of young earth creationism and intelligent design. Biography Nelson is the grandson of the creationist author and Lutheran minister Byron Christopher Nelson (1894–1972) and edited a book of his grandfather's writings. He is married to Suzanne Nelson, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University. In 1998, Nelson gained a PhD in philosophy from the University of Chicago. Nelson is a fellow of the Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture and of the International Society for Complexity, Information and Design. Paul Nelson is an American blues and rock guitarist, record producer, and songwriter. He has played and or recorded alongside artists such as Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, and members of the Allman Brothers Band. He was the hand picked guitarist to join Johnny Winter's band in 2010, performing on and producing several of Winter's albums, including the Grammy Award-nominated ''I'm a Blues Man'', ''Roots'', and '' Step Back'', which won the Grammy Award for Best Blues Album, debuted at #1 on the ''Billboard'' chart for Blues Albums, and Independent Albums, and debuted at #16 on the ''Billboard'' 200 albums chart, marking the highest spot in Winter's career.
