Paul Johnson (philanthropist)
Paul Jolliffe Johnson, ONL (1929- October 12, 2015) was a businessman and philanthropist born St. John's, Newfoundland, the son of Marjorie (Jolliffe) and Arthur Johnson. He was educated at Prince of Wales College, King's College, Mount Allison Academy and Mount Allison University. Johnson, who is a commerce graduate, became involved in many aspects of business in Newfoundland. Johnson assumed management of Johnson Insurance in 1953 and by 1990 was president and chief executive officer of Johnson Insurance Limited, Gulf-National Agencies, Unifund Assurance Company, Johnson Business Services Limited, Food Services Limited, Food Services Corporation Limited and Star Corporation Limited. Active in community and service organizations, Johnson served as chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, receiving the Distinguished Service Order for his work. The Order of Newfoundland and Labrador (french: Ordre du Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador) is a civilian honour for merit in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Instituted in 2001, when Lieutenant Governor Arthur Maxwell House granted Royal Assent to the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador Act, the order is administered by the Governor-in-Council and is intended to honour current or former Newfoundland and Labrador residents for conspicuous achievements in any field, being thus described as the highest honour amongst all others conferred by the Newfoundland and Labrador Crown. Railway Coastal Museum
The Railway Coastal Museum is a transport museum located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is located in the historic Newfoundland Railway terminal on Water Street, St. John's, Water Street and contains exhibits detailing the history of the Newfoundland Railway and the history of coastal water transportation in the province. The building was designated a National Historic Site in 1988 for its role in commemorating the important role played by the Newfoundland Railway in the social, economic and political history of the province. It was also designated a Heritage Railway Stations Protection Act, Heritage Railway Station in 1990. The museum has 40 themed exhibits, a virtual museum, artwork and displays highlighting the history of the railway beds in Newfoundland and Labrador. Johnson Geo Centre
The Johnson Geo Centre is a geological interpretation centre located on Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The museum is named for philanthropist Paul Johnson and opened in 2002. Building Design Most of the centre is located underground, in an excavated glacial formation that shows the exposed bedrock of the hill. The building is designed to take advantage of the geological features of Signal Hill where most of the structure is below ground exposing natural rock formations. The area was originally a peat filled area that was stripped of overburden and a glass-encased structure of 2.5 stories was built atop the excavation. The building was built through the Johnson Family Foundation at a cost of $11 million. The building utilizes a heating and cooling system via six geothermal wells drilled to a depth of 500 feet.
