Paul Grégoire
Paul Gr̩goire, (October 24, 1911 РOctober 30, 1993) was a Canadians, Canadian Cardinal (Catholicism), Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Roman Catholic Bishop of Montreal, Archbishop of Montreal from 1968 to 1990, and was elevated to the Cardinal (Catholicism), cardinalate in 1988. Biography Paul Gr̩goire was born in Viauville, Montreal, to J. Albert Gr̩goire and Marie Lavoie, but his family moved to Verdun, Quebec, Verdun shortly after his birth. He had two younger brothers, but his parents later adopted nine of his cousins. He studied at the Minor Seminary of St. Th̩r̬se in Blainville from 1925 to 1933, and then at the Grand s̩minaire de Montr̩al, Major Seminary of Montr̩al from 1933 to 1937, where he obtained a licentiate in theology. He was ordained a priest on May 22, 1937, and then taught at St. Th̩r̬se in Blanville until 1939. A cardinal ( la, Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae cardinalis, literally 'cardinal of the Holy Roman Church') is a senior member of the clergy of the Catholic Church. Cardinals are created by the ruling pope and typically hold the title for life. Collectively, they constitute the College of Cardinals. Their most solemn responsibility is to elect a new pope in a conclave, almost always from among themselves (with a few historical exceptions), when the Holy See is vacant. Verdun (; , ) is a borough (''arrondissement'') of the city of Montreal, Quebec, located in the southwestern part of the island. Pope John Paul II () created 231 cardinals in nine consistories held at roughly three-year intervals. Three of those cardinals were first created ''in pectore'', that is, without their names being announced, and only identified by the pope later. He named a fourth ''in pectore'' as well but never revealed that name. At his 2001 consistory, where he elevated 42 prelates and announced the names of two created ''in pectore'' earlier, he created more cardinals at one time than ever before or since.
