Paul Galvin (businessman)
Paul Vincent Galvin (June 29, 1895 – November 5, 1959) was an American chief executive, who was one of the two founders of telecommunications company Motorola. Founded as Galvin Manufacturing Corporation on September 25, 1928, Motorola became a leader in communications equipment. Galvin created the mass production car radio, which provided the cornerstone of Motorola's early business. The company name "Motorola" was introduced in 1930. Biography Galvin was born in Harvard, Illinois. He served as an artillery officer during World War I. Later, Galvin attended Illinois Institute of Technology. During college, Galvin was an active member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. He lived briefly in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Harvard is a city located in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 9,469 at the 2020 census. The city is 63 miles from the Chicago Loop and it is the last stop on the Union Pacific/Northwest Line. History The original owners of the land which came to be Harvard, Illinois, were Abram Carmack and Jacob Davis, who obtained it from the government in 1845 and sold it to Gilbert Brainard shortly afterward. Upon Gilbert Brainard's death, the land was purchased by Amos Page, Otis Eastman, and Elbridge Gerry Ayer. These three men planned the layout of the town and named it "Harvard" in honor of Harvard, Massachusetts. The plat was signed by Judge J. M. Strode in Woodstock, Illinois, on November 25, 1856. A battery eliminator is a device powered by an electrical source other than a battery, which then converts the source to a suitable DC voltage that may be used by a second device designed to be powered by batteries. A battery eliminator does away with the need to replace batteries but may remove the advantage of portability. A battery eliminator is also effective in replacing obsolete battery designs. Some examples of battery eliminators include the nine-volt mains power supply, the size and shape of a PP12 battery, originally intended to replace the battery in portable radios in the 1960s. A solar panel providing power for a portable appliance may also be considered a battery eliminator.
