Diocese Of Northern Karnataka Of The Church Of South India
Karnataka Northern Diocese is one among the twenty-two dioceses of the Church of South India which covers the churches in the northern part of Karnataka state. History of the Diocese Protestantism spread here mainly through the activities of the Basel Missionaries who came from Germany around 1836. About The diocese has the preview of 12 districts in Karnataka state consisting of Bellary, Bijapur, Chitradurga, Dharwad, Shimoga, Uttar Kannada, Haveri, Davangeri, Gadag, Koppal and Bagalkot . The diocese has 85 churches under its administration. The headquarters of the Karnataka Northern Diocese is at Dharwad. The Church of South India (CSI) is a united Protestant Church in India. It is the result of union of a number of mainline Protestant denominations in South India after independence. The Church of South India is the successor of a number of Protestant denominations in India, including the Church of England; Church of India, Burma and Ceylon (Anglican); the United Church of Christ ( Congregationalist); the British Methodist Church; and the Church of Scotland after Indian Independence. It combined the South India United Church (union of the British Congregationalists and the British Presbyterians); the then 14 Anglican dioceses of South India and one in Sri Lanka; and the South Indian District of the Methodist church.
