Patton Springs Independent School District is a public school district based in the community of Afton, Texas, United States. In addition to Afton, the district serves a portion of Dickens and rural areas in northeastern Dickens County. Patton Springs ISD has one school that serves students in prekindergarten through grade 12. Academic achievement In 2009, the school district was rated " exemplary" by the Texas Education Agency. Afton is an unincorporated community in northern Dickens County, Texas, United States. History A post office was established in the community under the name Beckton in 1893, and the name was changed to Afton in 1900. Dickens is a city in and the county seat of Dickens County, Texas, United States. The population was 286 at the 2010 census, down from 332 at the 2000 census. Charles Weldon Cannon (1915–1997), a Dickens County native, made his famous boots and saddles in Dickens. Geography Dickens is located west of the center of Dickens County at (33.621341, –100.834987), with the Croton Breaks to the east and Mackenzie Peak to the north. Dickens County, Texas
Dickens County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 1,770. Its county seat is Dickens. The county was created in 1876 and later organized in 1891. Both the county and its seat are named for J. Dickens, who died at the Battle of the Alamo. The Pitchfork Ranch is in Dickens and adjacent King County. It was managed from 1965 to 1986 by Jim Humphreys, who was also affiliated with the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock. The Matador Ranch, based in Motley County, once reached into Dickens County. Six-man football is a variant of gridiron football played with six players per team, instead of the standard 11 or 12. It is generally played by high schools in rural areas of the United States and Canada. History Six-man football was developed in 1934 by Stephen Epler in Chester, Nebraska, as an alternative means for small high schools to field a football team during the Great Depression. The first game was played on Thursday, September 27, 1934, at the Hebron, Nebraska Athletic Gridiron, under the lights, with a crowd of almost 1000 watching. This game was played so that coaches all over Kansas and Nebraska could see if they wanted to try this new game of six-man. The two teams playing in the game were the combined team from Hardy-Chester ("Hard-Chests") and a combined team from Belvidere-Alexandria ("Belvalex").
