Patrik Vankrunkelsven
Patrick Jules Maria Vankrunkelsven (born 2 May 1957), is a Belgian physician, professor of medicine and politician. He obtained an MD and PhD from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Leuven, Belgium). Political career He was president of the Volksunie from 1998 until 2000, succeeding Bert Anciaux. When that party was dissolved in 2001, he initially chose the left-liberal Social Liberal Party (Belgium), SPIRIT, but eventually went to the Flemish Liberals and Democrats, VLD where he was senator from 2007 until 2011. He was part of the party's left (politics), left wing. Patrik Vankrunkelsven has been mayor of Laakdal from 1994 to 2006. Belgian Senate
The Senate ( nl, Senaat, ; french: Sénat, ; german: Senat) is one of the two chambers of the bicameral Federal Parliament of Belgium, the other being the Chamber of Representatives. Volksunie
People's Union ( nl, Volksunie, VU) was a Flemish nationalist political party in Belgium, formed in 1954 as a successor to the Christian Flemish People's Union. The Volksunie defined itself as a big tent and catch-all party that combined support from the left and right with the main goal of focusing on increased Flemish autonomy and establishing more linguistic and political rights for the Flemish community. The party also based its platform on civic nationalism over radicalism in order to foster a more legitimate image. It also contained members sympathetic to federalism and full separatism, with its stance on whether to secede Flanders from Belgium or redefine Belgium as a federal nation in which Flanders had devolved power changing with its leadership. Flemish (''Vlaams'') is a Low Franconian dialect cluster of the Dutch language. It is sometimes referred to as Flemish Dutch (), Belgian Dutch ( ), or Southern Dutch (). Sociaal-Liberale Partij (; SLP; Dutch for Social Liberal Party) was a Belgian Flemish political party formed after dissolution of the moderate nationalist People's Union (''Volksunie'') party. Prior to 19 April 2008 it was known as Spirit, and intermediately as Flemish Progressives (VlaamsProgressieven). The party merged with Groen in the end of 2009, ceasing to exist. Bert Jozef Herman Vic Anciaux (born 11 September 1959) is a Belgian politician and Vooruit faction leader in the Belgian Senate. He was one of the founders of Spirit (later known as the Flemish Progressives, then the Social Liberal Party, or SLP). Served as Minister for Culture, Youth and Sport in the Flemish Government from 2004 until 2009, he was also Minister for relations with the Brussels-Capital Region and the Brussels Parliament ( nl, Minister voor Brusselse Aangelegenheden).
