Patrie (1946 Film)
''Patrie'' (English: ''Country'') is a 1946 French historical film, historical drama film directed by Louis Daquin and starring Pierre Blanchar, Maria Mauban and Jean Desailly. It was entered into the 1946 Cannes Film Festival. Like the 1917 Patrie (1917 film), silent film of the same title it is based on the 1869 play by Victorien Sardou.Goble p.904 It was shot at the Epinay Studios in Paris. The film's sets were designed by the art director René Moulaert. Plot In Brussels in the 1560s the rebelling Flemish nobles are battling the Spanish under the Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba, Duke of Alba. 1946 Cannes Film Festival
The 1st annual Cannes Film Festival was held from 20 September to 5 October 1946. Twenty-one countries presented their films at the "First Cannes International Film Festival", which took place at the former Casino of Cannes. Only one year after the end of World War II, most of the films were about the war. There arose several technical issues, such as the tarpauline cover blowing away in a storm on the day before the winners were to be announced, the reels of Alfred Hitchcock’s '' Notorious'' shown in reverse order, and Miguel M. Delgado’s ''The Three Musketeers'' projected upside-down. During the first festival, the jury was made up of one representative per country, with French historian Georges Huisman as the Jury President. Julien Bertheau
Julien Bertheau (19 June 1910 – 28 October 1995) was a French actor. Biography Born in Algiers, Algeria, before making his debut at the Comédie-Française on 18 December 1936, he worked as manager of the Theatre de la Porte Saint-Martin, then he studied with Charles Dullin at the Atelier Theatre, appeared in plays at the Comédie des Champs-Elysées and finally worked with Louis Jouvet. He left the Comédie-French after twenty-two years. In 1961, he starred in '' Madame Sans-Gene'' opposite Sophia Loren. Bertheau was one of the favorite actors of Luis Buñuel, appearing in his ''Cela s'appelle l'aurore'' (1955), playing a maitre d'hotel in '' La Voie lactée'' (1969), a bishop in '' Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie'' (1972) and a policeman in '' Le Fantôme de la liberté'' (1974).
